You are a wonderful person, you know that, right? Thank you for doing this as both Jen and I know Autumn was in good hands.

Re: Endogenous Ideas, Exogenous Translations

"Sympathetic Noose" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. First, plenty of graduate boards weigh the significance of the GRE differently, depending on the program and school you're aiming for. I performed DISMALLY on the test: a combined score of - yes - 760. With a shitty score like that, you know that the application board overlooked that little detail. As I have gathered from a professor who evaluate applications at AU School of International Service, she told me that many professors look at other, more relevant academic characteristics such as one's GPA, geographic location and courses taken for relevancy to the candidate's program of interest.

Study plenty, of course, but I figure the above can provide some peace of mind. I still say this today whenever the GRE becomes a topic of discussion: "What the fuck does an right angle triangle and basic geometry have to do with an M.A. in international relations?" Good luck!

Re: Victoria Jean's Tumblelog

I used to listen to Love and Distance nonstop. One, Paul W. is a fellow at American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a prominent neo-conservative/conservative think tank. I saw him speak at a forum on U.S.-Japanese security relations. It was as if the room went quiet as their "king" spoke to his loyal subjects (kid you not). Satire aside, Paul W. is not the end all, be all when it comes to maturing political discussions across the United States.

Humor, satire, etc are not the overarching themes of these news programs, but throwing in a jab or joke here or there does not sully the topics at hand. I bet whenever humor, satire etc are used, it is in relations to questionable actions, possible gaffes, commentating on one of the two campaign teams, not on issues such as nuclear North Korea - two distinct topics with two distinctly different talking points. The problem with Frum's cure-all advice is its elitism, and the assumed "fact" that Americans will eat just about anything the media feeds them with their greasy spoons.

Re: the another David Frum video. Frum is such the maker of a straw-man fallacious. Attacking character is quite different from staging a verbal front on their arguments. Man, he is such a rat.

Re: indie//andyy

Hell yeah! Military service is just one, and whether you volunteer at a soup kitchen every Sunday or you are patrolling the sandy dunes in Iraq, one does not hold precedent over the other.

Re: indie//andyy

It sounds like the McCain campaign machine is just throwing together these TV ads, believing the viewer will take it down without acknowledge just what exactly he or she is swallowing. These ads are kind of insulting, if you ask me, on the content choice: does camp McCain think Americans are that vapid to accept messages as they come?

Re: indie//andyy

Obama camp comes up with catchy rhetorical devices, McCain steals 'em. It was Obama who came in with this notion of "change," yet McCain uses "reform" as if the word is not out of style. It is the mess Bush and his administration is leaving behind, yet McCain supports a number of Bush policies. Indeed, change is keyword of this presidential election and it has latched onto a number of voters of both parties. I think credit is due were it is due, from the origin of the source.

Re: Can Someone Please Explain to Me...

In some instances, big companies with deep political and economic ties produce something called "moral hazard." First ladies and their endeavors are hidden behind the "real" politics where men, of course, dominate that field. Michelle Obama will hopefully, like her husband, break that mold.
