Blue Plum had pledged to help support our first mural project but after those funds were stolen, they are focusing on paying back their vendors. We are all unpaid volunteers who are raising funds to put back into our community. Although JC Public Art is a public board and city supported, we still raise almost all of our funds through private donations. We have a new mural (funded with the help of local businesses & individuals) going up in the spring and then our third round of public sculpture coming next year. Our meetings are the 2nd Wed 5pm of every month at City Hall, anyone who is interested may attend. I'm excited to see a Blue Plum 2017, Little Chicago 2017, and more events, festivals, & experiences in our awesome town.

Re: Tour guide hopes discussing past will keep buildings from being history

Hi Alby-

I'm not running for county commission but I do have a passion for our region (and cool hats).

Re: Tour highlights Model Mill's past before building becomes history

(sorry for the repost, comments were acting up)

Sam,

Thanks for your comment. I would love to see the building redone with a mix of residential and commercial. Similar projects in Nashville & Knoxville like Rolling Mill Hill, have been very successful. There have been several developers that expressed an interest in bringing this vision to the Model Mill property. Especially if you want to attract a young and diverse audience. It is definitely your right to watch the Model Mill crumble but I don't think anyone should be happy we are tearing down a 105 year old piece of our history.

And yes, it is embarrassing for us all that we have let the building sit this long. But if there is a chance to save it, we owe it to ourselves, our past and future generations, to try to do just that.

Re: Tour highlights Model Mill's past before building becomes history

Sam, thanks for the reply. I would love to see the Model Mill developed into residential and commercial space. Similar to projects in Knoxville and Nashville where they have reclaimed historic Mills and turned them into amazing apartments and retail/commercial space. I love the idea of appropriate apartments and there has been interest from several developers in reclaiming this building to make that happen.

I agree with your embarrassment comment, Johnson City has let this building fall apart and we should all be embarrassed that we have let it come this far. But if there is even a chance of saving it, I think we owe it to our history and to our future residents to attempt to save it. Underneath the faded white paint, metal buildings, and graffiti, there stands an amazing 4 story brick structure that's 105 years old and chock full of history.

And as a young and diverse member of our city (I think I'm still young anyways, definitely diverse though) I love urban design and would love to see a mix of old and new throughout our city. The Model Mill grain elevators would be perfect urban condos!

You may be ready to see it crumble and that is your right. But destroying a 105 year old piece of our history shouldn't bring anyone joy.

Re: Tour highlights Model Mill's past before building becomes history

Hello Guest, thanks for your comments. I respect those who want to move forward on this project, I am a big fan of looking to the future and what will come next, it's part of my life everyday. But I also am concerned that we are losing a large part of our history that we will never recover. There were several offers and plans to save some or all of the property, including offers from several historical associations to help save the Model Mill. The Chamber of Commerce began this journey with the intent of saving the property and possibly relocating their offices and a welcome center as part of a revitalized project and this was eagerly embraced by our community.

I realize that a "lucrative offer" could reverse the Chamber of Commerce's original intent but it does seem to be conflicting with their stated mission "to promote business, enhance economic and community development, and serve as a catalyst for improving the overall quality of life in the community and region."

While you may view the efforts of the community as "too little, too late", I am excited to see the passion that has ignited our city and I hope that it continues, whether that's focused on saving the Model Mill or the rest of our history.

My hope is that everyone will gain an appreciation for where we have come from and how that will guide our future. There is always hope!

Re: Your Website Is Like Bilbo’s Ring

Magic indeed! I carry one knife and it does multiple things but ultimately it is only one device. Imagine if you were trying to carry 30 knives, each with one slightly different unique tool. That is what the social media space feels like right now. I don't need another swiss army knife... I just want my devices to help me get things done.

(I know that the Swiss Army folks are trying to figure out how to stream an RSS feed of how you use your knife. Opened can of Beanie Weenies on Feb 11 2010--- Bijan likes this, 2 others shared this, etc...)

Re: Discussion with David Meerman Scott!

You guys rock!

Re: Read this before you die

Good questions... I am light on answers. I have planned very little for the future of my online content. I have hard drive backups of video and audio but there is a ton of stuff online that is not duplicated any where else. I was kinda hoping google cache and the wayback machine at internet archive would just magically take care of this issue.

Let me know what you come up with.

Re: [bijan sabet] the personal tumblelog of Bijan Sabet

Congrats Bijan - Great fit.
