I will now commence sending this to every person I know. I first saw The Lips back in 1989, without having heard a single song of theirs before. I went out and picked up all three of their albums the next day. It's hard to believe that 20 years later they're still rocking my socks off even though they are nothing like they were back then. How many bands can pull that off?

Re: Happy Birthday Melissa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yay! Thanks Smadin!

Ok now, here's the thing: rrp is right. I'm not adverse to saying someone is A Racist of A Sexist because I feel that there are people who do fit the noun use of those terms. I was just at Stormfront this morning, and those folks are nothing but a bunch of capital-R racists. Hands down. There's the rub, though. When I was writing out my thoughts on the matter, I was thinking within the confines of working with allies and potential allies. I suspect that you're doing the same thing here. What you refer to as the use of adjectives versus nouns I see as the difference between critiquing actions and the person. It's a slight, maybe almost inconsequential semantic difference, but a difference nonetheless.

Let's see if I can explain what I'm thinking here. Say that Melissa comes to me and says, "Hey Kev, that remark you just made was awfully sexist, what's up with that?." It's my duty, as a friend and supporter of Feminism, to check my privilege and examine myself in order to be a better friend and supporter, not to get all "b...b...b...but, I'm not a sexist! I wrote a blog post on Blog for Choice Day even! How dare you call me a capital-S sexist! I'm talking my ball and going home!" You see, what I 'Liss just hypothetically said was that I "did" something that was sexist, not that I "am" a sexist in all my being. So, the disconnect that I find myself talking about is when people confuse adjectival phrases with noun phrases. As Melissa says, this stuff is institutionalized and normalized in our culture. It can be difficult to break free from, and we will all slip now and again. And I don't say this meaning to offer anyone a pass, but to reinforce the need to own our shit.

But yeah, I feel that both the adjectives and the nouns are useful within their proper contexts. Some people really are just racists and/or sexists plain and simple. Doesn't mean that they'll always be that way, but as I see it, that's how it is sometimes. Pointing that out, though, is not the same as pointing out problematic actions (using adjectives) on the part of someone who should be willing to work with you toward common goals.

I hope that made sense. I'm suffering from a massive head cold right now and not sure I'm thinking as clearly as I could.

Re: Coming Out -- Again.

Dear PD,

You have been, and continue to be my hero.

That is all. I've been using FF3, on a friggin' Linux box no less, since it was in the beta stage. I never had any problems with it until the official release. Now, it crashes on me all the time. WTF? The betas were more solid than the official release?

Re: Question of the Day

The Wire, without a doubt.

Re: Black Weblog Awards

Wow.
