If I were one of the kidnappers, the last thing I would do is kill the hostage. I can understand trying to get to the shore with the hostage in the hopes of negotiating from a position of relative strength. I can even understand waiving a white flag and taking my chances with Obama's brand of Justice, which he promises will be torture-free. But I don't understand shooting the hostage in that situation. A living hostage would be my only bargaining chip if I didn't give up, and my one redeeming quality if I did.

Moreover, I haven't yet found any reports of instances where Somali pirates have killed a hostage - are there any? (Reuter's says that "Somali pirates have generally not harmed their hostages")

(I know that the French yacht captain was killed, but French defense minister Hervé Morin acknowledged that it might have been a French bullet which killed him.)
