When we won our school spelling bee, our mom would buy us one of those giant chocolate chip cookie cakes. One year, my mom got my sister her cookie cake with the phrase "Congratulations Champion Speller" on it in frosting, except the baker accidentally wrote "Champion Seller" instead. It was a particularly amusing typo given the context.

Re: 11 Wonderful Things That Have Happened On the Ides of March - 11Points.com

March 15, 2002 - I lost my virginity.

Re: 11 Picks For NFL 2010 Week 14, Broncos at Cardinals - 11Points.com

it's not about which cheerleaders are hotter, it's about which are "randier" (read: trashier).

Re: 11 Picks For NFL 2010 Week 14, Broncos at Cardinals - 11Points.com

tough week for @natelopez53 - also bizarro sam movin' into 2nd place! woo hoo!

Re: 11 Picks For NFL 2010 Week 14, Broncos at Cardinals - 11Points.com

nice prediction dude.

Re: 11 Important Lessons We Can Learn From Songs About Thanks and Giving - 11Points.com

right, because vampires used to be manly and macho? I for one am not at all a proponent of strict feminism, but your jokes for your number 8 category I find particularly distasteful and misogynistic. Worse, they're lazy.

Also, this is griping on my part and perhaps chauvinist, but I would think for this category you would pick the cheerleaders that are more physically attractive, not bleached blonde fakes tanned bimbos that would be more likely to give you an illicit hand job while they're supposed to be giving you a lap dance. But maybe I'm just not getting what this category is about.

In closing, I thoroughly enjoy your NFL picks, but PLEASE change the category for number 8. I'm not sure how many more disgustingly sexist, boring, misogynistic quips I can take.

Re: 11 Picks For 2010 NFL Week 2, Texans at Redskins - 11Points.com

First, let me say that I am not at all surprised the the user who chose "NomoreNFLpicks" as his handle is European.

Now, loath as I am to answer a question that can be explained by "just fucking googling it," I will do so briefly here.

Now, in most American sports, a team's won-loss record is represented by this parenthetical construct, where X is the number of wins, Y is the number of losses, and in certain sports, Z is the number of ties (or draws if that helps you understand the latter concept better). So, it will look like this (X-Y-Z). Using this simple formula, if a team has 4 wins, 3 losses, and no draws, their record will be written like this (4-3). Now, being as the above list tallies the win-loss record with only one to go on, they're all written either as (0-1) or as (1-0), depending on whether or not they predicted correctly.

Hopefully this has been helpful. Might I add, however, that I find it unendearing for a European to beg ignorance as a way of displaying their disdain for something, an action and almost universally considered a trait exclusive to the big-headed, arrogant, American character. All of the questions you've stated here could easily be answered by a simple google search. Want to know which team won? Search NFL scores for that week. Want to know how win-loss records are tallied? See my thorough answer above, or google it, it's not difficult.

So, kudos to you, the aptly named "NomoreNFLpicks" for being self-absorbed, lazy, ignorant, and whiny. I commend you for helping me to prove that these are traits not only of stupid annoying Americans, but of various peoples across the globe.

Re: 11 Music Superstars Who are Technically No-Hit Wonders - 11Points.com

"Granted, they only got out three albums before Brad Nowell overdosed on heroin."

As much as I hate to be a stick-in-the-mud (ok that's not true), this is technically inaccurate. Brad OD'ed 2 months before the third album, "Sublime" was released. According to the wikipedia (with grain of salt in hand), the album was originally to be titled "Killin' It," but they changed it after Brad's death so as not to be insensitive about that matter. So this explains why this is a self-titled album, which is unusual for a modern band, which usually reserves self-titled albums for initial releases.

Also, interestingly, the three tracks you listed, which were also the 3 I first knew about concerning Sublime, were on this third record. I think for non-California kids, these are the main Sublime songs to which most people are exposed, unless they are big Sublime fans or are friends with one. I never knew how widely adored they were until I moved to L.A. for college. Funny how almost everyone I know in L.A. mentions Sublime as one of the bands they like, regardless of whatever the main genre of music they claim to like is.

Re: 11 Picks For 2010 NFL Week 1, Falcons at Steelers - 11Points.com

Only one big breakout rushing TD, but seals the game in OT. So, in their equally NorCal hippy sensibility, Stanford changed its mascot to the Cardinal. Not the cardinals, the dark red, burgundy-ish color, Cardinal. They have the equally lame christmas tree anthropomorphic mascot because they could not think of a way to physically represent the color Cardinal as a mascot.

I'm sure Sam could come up with 11 points for such a list.

Re: 11 Decidedly Unintimidating College Mascots - 11Points.com

My high school biology teacher (both regular and AP) played for the Delta State Women's Basketball team when she was in college. She explained the Statesmen --> Fightin' Okra change thusly: According to her, the mascout outfit for the Statesman was fairly comical, and a lot of the students said that his outfit made him look like an okra. Thus, the student body began ironically referring to the Statesman as the Fightin' Okra. And they decided to just go literal with it. I can't verify the veracity of this account, but as it was told to me by the only alumna of Delta State I've ever met, I believe it.

Also, she was the coolest teacher of all time.

Re: 11 Splendidly Bad 'Sports Illustrated' Predictions from the '90s - 11Points.com

Nitpicking here, but Stephen A. These predictions are splendidly bad in retrospect for various reasons - the Yankees one is bad because now, after seeing how dominant the Yankees have been pretty much since the mid-90s, it's funny to see in a list of 90s sports predictions that they were predicted to be awful. The Bulls one is bad because, as hindsight is 20/20, of COURSE the Bulls were going to repeat. They were not only going to repeat, but 3-peat TWICE, and also set the single season record for wins. There is a level of tongue-in-cheek humor apparently beyond your comprehension in saying that this was a bad prediction. It was a bad prediction because, in retrospect, it seems like a ridiculous understatement.

Maybe if you had finished the list you would have eventually understood the inherent humor behind the list - they weren't all wrong predictions, just funny in retrospect for various reasons.

Re: 11 Movie Titles With Numbers Awkwardly Substituted For Letters - 11Points.com

thir13en ghosts was a scary movie in theaters, for a 15 year old that had not yet gotten into south park, thereby forever ruining any and all movies with awful dialogue and ridiculously trite character types (e.g. inception).

also, 5nal destination? that's hilarious. i very rarely lol at things online, but this was one of those rare moments. ya can't make this stuff up, i guess.

Re: 11 Things That Are Cute When You're a Baby But Hideous As an Adult - 11Points.com

you people are going to hell.

Re: 11 Things You Didn't Know About Comic Sans - 11Points.com

if you knew about comic chat, and the list is 11 things you didn't know about comic sans, shouldn't you expect not to find it on the list?

Re: 11 Classic Simpsons Quotes About America - 11Points.com

i gotta agree with previous posters, jamie moyer isn't really past his prime, because he never really had one. he was never a really good pitcher, he's just been solid for 24 years or so. he was never a superstar, i don't think he ever had more than 15 wins in a season, but he has been eerily consistent pretty much his whole career.

also, @#10: it's not irony. it's not irony in any sense of the word, except for in the sense that people regularly misuse the word. it's not the opposite of what you expect, it's exactly what you would expect. it's the opposite of irony.

i guess you could get into the quixotic nature of using "irony" in a situation that is the opposite of irony, thus having it be ironically ironic, but since this inaccurate definition of "irony" is so frequently applied, maybe it's not ironic that the term is being bandied, bloodied, and absolutely abused.

of course, i suppose within the context of a blog about the mediocrity of america/ns, the blatant misuse of "irony" is actually quite fitting. i'm going to assume this was your intent, and begrudgingly salute you for it.

Re: 11 Thoughts On Inception - 11Points.com

you think you're smarter and more knowledgeable than you are, monster. go back to your dorm room and eat some granola.

i, for one, though sam's points about the wife and kids was dead on point. i also, however, thought the movie was laughably average. so i may not be entirely unbiased.
