Thanks for the responses! It seems for the most part that making the shoutbox private is not a very desirable feature.

The reasons I asked this question is because one the most common complaints i see about BlogCatalog is the spam messages people get in their shoutbox.

twitter outages are usually fairly brief even if they are frequent, it's usually not so hard to play catch up in that case.

thats strange. when i logged out and made a test comment it just did some AJAX type stuff to tell me the comment is awaiting moderation, didnt even leave the page.
