My issue with it had to do with a publication talking about how wrong it was for Facebook to not respect the privacy of its users while distributing private communication from someone else. No one seemed to be bothered by this because it dealt with Zuckerberg, but it bugged me.

Like I said in my post, I'm not going to defend their practices. I don't want to, and I can't.

Before any issues about privacy were being raised, I had very limited information on my profile and my privacy settings set where only friends can see much of anything and where I wasn't available on search. I'm on there basically to update a few people, (mostly family) because it's the fastest way. So while I'm not going to delete my account, I don't have too much there in the first place.

And by the way, to clarify, while I reblogged your post, I wasn't trying to call you out about anything. I just was wanting to make an observation about the direction things have been headed. I hope you didn't feel like it was directed at you specifically.

Re: http://funsizebytes.com/post/385602674

We have a pizza place named Bimbo's Pizza here. Unfortunately, it's not as if either group is really wrong about what they are saying. Stars were given out for pretty much anything and everything and there were a lot of people (in both groups) who seemed to get a ton of stars for simply...well, you know where I'm going with that. I can think of people from both groups who end up with a lot of stars that I find pretty much intolerable, but that's humor. It's personal, and I can't convince you of what should be considered funny any more than you could convince me.

There was never anything that said that stars must be used for humor only. I click a star when something makes me laugh, but also when it makes me happy. A friend announces something wonderful that happened to them, I click the star. In that way, I use it like the heart on Tumblr. Even among those who were the main people on Favrd, stars have never been exclusively used for humor. The problem arose when people became obsessed with them and found value in the stars rather than the people. And then, of course came the perceived rivalry with the old guard (if you'll forgive the term), when people didn't feel that they were recognized as they should be.

All of this, however, does not mean that they are entirely wrong. There are people who get stars for who they are rather than for how funny they are. As soon as a lot of the "favstar people" started showing up on Favrd, there were complaints about who these new people were. And long before that, there was discussion of not letting people know about Tumblr so that the uncool people wouldn't show up. Others may not agree with me, but it seems like condescendingly mocking people as a response to accusations of elitism is probably the fastest way to prove them right.

Like I said, neither side is really wrong in much of what they say. However, from the outside looking in, people on both sides seem (to me, at least) to be wrong in how they have approached it. Personally, I'd just like things to go back to being funny.

Anyway, I just thought I'd chime in with my perspective, since you have always seemed fairly open-minded.

Re: Fun Size Bytes - What should I see?

A little late now, but I'll answer anyway. I've only seen one of these, and I'd recommend it: The Blind Side.

It's not for everybody, but it's got a nice story and football. Plus, since it takes place when Oher was being recruited, it's like a weird time capsule where all of the SEC coaches are on the wrong teams. Saban's wearing purple and gold, Houston Nutt's still a Razorback, Holtz's ill-fitting dentures are at South Carolina instead of on ESPN. (No Ron Zook, though, sorry.) It has it's flaws (like oversimplifying a complicated situation for much of the time), but it was pretty enjoyable.

I also really enjoyed the book, if you haven't read it. It has a lot more discussion of the entire concept of the importance of left tackle and how the game has changed, with Oher's story mixed in.

A warning if you or those you are with are at all squeamish about things like this: One of the first things you see in the movie is LT breaking Joe Theisman's leg.

Re: I've made a huge mistake. - I carried a plate of Mexican food all the way up...

I was going to do this, I really was, but I couldn't find any way to take a picture of this giant paw at the end of my arm up against the screen that didn't end up looking like I was punching you in the face. But the thought was still there. *fistbump*

Re: Cloudya

Awesome, nice to know that despite not having run a gel of any sort in 8+ years I can still recognize Eppendorf tubes full of dye.

Ok, I'll shut up since, unless you've already put in around 80 hours of work this week, you need to get moving. (Yeah, I may miss running the occasional gel, but I don't miss grad school at all.)

Re: Cloudya

I've seen worse. Specifically my bench when I was in grad school. (or my desk now for that matter) Lots of important discoveries came about because some scientist was a slob. I had a prof who used to refer to it as the principle of limited sloppiness. My issue was the "limited" part.

Once, two of us in the lab were on vacation at the same time, and the people left in the lab thought playing practical jokes would be a good idea. They moved all of the other guy's stock solutions around and taped things shut, but for me, they thought the best practical joke was cleaning my desk.

Also: Firefly!

Also, also: Are you getting ready to run a gel in this picture? That's what it looks like to me, but I'm probably filtering through my own lab work.

Re: Fun Size Bytes - SHE'S SO

"Just like a one-wing dove…"

Oh, so that's what your avatar is.

Re: Fun Size Bytes - kurafire:

I'm often curious about how others have developed their allegiances. For example: I went to New Mexico State University and Illinois, but when it comes down to it, my main loyalty isn't with either of them. I grew up rooting for Alabama and going to games in Tuscaloosa & Birmingham, and that experience outweighs classes and degrees (at least when it comes to football). Now I'm stuck in Spartan/Wolverine territory, which doesn't help with my feelings that the Big 10 is a remarkably overrated conference overall. In addition, with the exception of UM/OSU fans hating each other, I have yet to see the same passion from Big 10 fans that I see from SEC fans (who for all their hatred of opposing teams, do usually at least have a grudging respect for their opponent and their fans).

2006/7 was kind of a weird year anyway with people suggesting a rematch of OSU vs. Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl. It was one of those times (like last season), where I really feel like the best team was national champ, but a playoff would have made things much easier.

I should probably just stop at this point, since I tend to be long-winded in general and even more so when it comes to college football.

Re: Douchebag- right here

I tweeted too.

Re: The Twitter/Tumblr List

@thefount
thefount.tumblr.com
