Yes...I thought the same thing for a while. But as I thought about it more...Pi absolutely loved his mother. Why would he create a story so wretched and bad that included him having to watch his mother murdered. It was filled with passionate detail whereas when Orange Juice died it was defined as just sort of "happening".

I tried for a long time to believe that the story with the tiger was the true one, but it wasn't. It was the "better one." Pi was never so much concerned about truth as we was about beauty. He saw the beauty in Hindu, Christianity, and Islam, without bothering with nuisances like truth and doctrine. In his madness from living the existence he did so solitary and alone once he dispatched of the cook, his mind dreamt up the scenario with the tiger. He even journaled it. Now...the island...I believe....was real. That it truly happened to Pi. He has already killed the cook and is alone, and in his first story, he makes a point to say..."I am certain that no one will believe this, but it happened to me." As if he is saying, "Now...this part is REALLY true." This was not included in his second account because the Japenese guys already said that they didn't buy it so why rehash it.

ANYway...that may all be balderdash too. :)

We did it for the same reason. We didn't want our daughter to think we might be lying about Jesus as well. So in our house, Jesus is real, and Santa is make believe...but we still have him around. We put out cookies for him, but my daughter nibbles a little before bed, right after filling my stocking. She usually keeps it to herself, because we don't want to be "those" parents, but she knows what is truth and what is make-believe.

(I found out when I was 9...can you tell? I'm still a tad pissed about it.)
