If the Dwolla DB is on a different box (as it should be), I could dig through the Dwolla source on the infiltrated shared box and probably find the DB credentials somewhere in the source code, as well as its address, and easily tap into the DB box from the hacked shared box and then dump the database that way. If the DB is encrypted in some way bonus points to Dwolla, I'm blocked there.

It's easy to make blasé comments like yours without any backing data. Where am I wrong in this assessment? Do you have some implicit knowledge of Dwolla systems that I do not? All I know is a site the size of Dwolla using "shared hosting" doesn't seem right... unless its for something trivial like a quick cache or something. That clearly is NOT the case as both the main site, AND the API are completely down right now.

Please, drop some knowledge on me.

Re: Dwolla.com updates

I'm going to have to echo what many users have already mentioned- if you have millions of users and their financial data in shared hosting environment that's a very large security risk.

Time to get some dedicated boxes.

I would like to give props to whoever runs your dwolla_support twitter account- very responsive and friendly.

Re: Important Note: Major Migration Occurring 10.23.2011

The migration has been slightly delayed due to extenuating circumstances. I will try to put up pretty graphics and stuff while I'm shuffling around the data and bringing the new architecture online but the site may just be _down_ for an hour or so around that time- I'll do my best to make the experience as painless as possible for all users. I wonder if you're right and it has to do with detecting MouseEvents in SWFs loaded from a different URL- for example if you have 2 SWFs on a webpage but they are loaded from different domains (ie: different sandboxes, lets call them SWF A and SWF B. SWF B is listening for SandboxMouseEvent) and then clicking in SWF A would trigger the related SandboxMouseEvent in SWF B (MouseClickSomewhere). I never even thought of that... I mean you can accomplish the same thing through LocalConnection, but SandboxMouseEvent does seem like an easier solution than all the LocalConnection garbage... I wonder if that's it's intended use? Guess I'll have to put together another demo! :)

Re: Quora Details Their New Answer Ranking Scheme; Their “PageRank”, Of Sorts

Quora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora QuoraQuora Quora Quora Quora Quora Quora

Re: Facebook Photos Going Hi-Res So You Won’t Have To Squint To Relive Your Memories

Nice. Use FBPhotoExport to Save Them to Your Computer

Hi GIlberto,

I am actually the developer of FBPhotoExport- thank you very much for the writeup this is a great how-to of how to use the software. Just thought I would add I realize that the modal loading screens are very annoying and that a new version of the tool will be rolling out very soon (hopefully this weekend) which utilizes passive loading as well as caching so that you aren't stuck reloading the data every time (if you don't want to). It also has some other useability and bug fixes- you should receive it through the automagic update mechanism :)

Thanks again, and if you have any suggestions on how I can improve it / add more functionality please let me know! I was thinking maybe a direct export to flickr or other 3rd party photo services? Anyway, big thanks and kudos for the writeup!

Re: No Parents Allowed: College-Exclusive Social Network Launches

We have been doing this at http://www.collegeblender.com for quite a while now (over a year). And we have solutions to all that stuff about after college, non edu emails, etc. etc.

I think it is cool to see more focus on the college space, there is a lot of cool stuff happening in college research-wise. Additionally when you have a group of people all sharing a similar experience on such a large scale it naturally lends itself to a community based tool, but I think the execution has yet to be nailed.

Copying Facebook and making it EDU-only is not the answer.

Re: A Small Update

Hi Mark,

Sorry for the trouble, could you provide me with some more detail? Thats so weird that it doesn't work on your main laptop... maybe its something with ubuntu... or maybe its how im passing the selected exports on to the xml page. I am going to try to pass the vars using a different method which may fix the issues (the preselected one is hard coded, thats why it works everytime).

I am working on getting the photo exporter completed this weekend and then ill circle back and implement the variable-passing using a different method.

Just want to thank you guys for your help troubleshooting this, I know it can be frustrating but I'm just 1 dude doing this after I get off my dayjob so I have very limited testing resources at my disposal, but with your help I will get the exports working for as many people/platforms as possible :)

Sit tight for now, Ill roll the photo exporter out this weekend (fingers crossed!) and then update the main data export stuff to hopefully get it workin for everyone. My suggestion would be remove the app from your facebook profile (Account -> Application Settings) and then logout and try the entire process again. It will prompt you to add the app and allow it a subset of permissions, just go through the motion and see if that works.

If other people were having similar issues it would be easier to diagnose but so far you are the only person who has had problems (and I have had several friends try across a spectrum of browsers and OS's)

Let me know how it goes, sorry for the difficulty!

Re: Spotify vs. Grooveshark vs. Pandora

Daniel brings up a good point, I'll admit. But Ron makes no sense in comparing "what Wikipedia states as spotify active users" to what grooveshark's website gets in terms of views.

Grooveshark has an offline client, and a mobile client as well- much like spotify. So simply counting the "wikipedia claimed spotify users" vs grooveshark monthly website visits is far and away from an accurate comparison.

To be truly accurate you would have to compare spotify active users vs grooveshark active users. But I don't think any of us can get our hands on that actual data.

Re: New Site… FacebookExport.com – Export your Facebook data

Thanks for helpin weed through this.
