Theology is when I say: "when Jesus prays to the Father in the Spirit in Matthew, we contemplate our share in his own triune life," or something like that that interprets scripture. or it could be mystagogy, interpreting the ritual activity of the church: "in the epiclesis we call down the Spirit as Christ's body corporate and receive our own incorporation," etc. What do you think?

Re: The Stretta Procedure: We're going to need more patch cords...

Fantastic! I have now given in completely to my desire for a modular system. Now, I will simply start saving! Your brother is clearly creative and a maker as well. His work is beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

Re: The Stretta Procedure: What is the role of synthesis?

Totally agree. I too am disappointed with this misuse of the great name of "Jupiter" for another workstation. You predicted it EXACTLY.

You said:

"One knob per function with no modality. In fact, do it without an LCD display. If you need to access a display window for additional functions, fail. If you can't touch it, it doesn't exist."

You are dedicated to modular. I'm stuck with polysynths. But you are a designer, maker, etc. If you were going to make and market a new analog polysynth, what would you do? Describe the specs -- I would love to read about it!

(And you're right about menus: if you can't touch it, it isn't there. I love the sound of my A6, but I think I am going to have to sell it . . . It is not intuitive and I don't find myself drawn to it . . . That's too bad for a $3K price tag . . . so I think I am going to go for something Dave Smith. I've already got a computer -- it has all the menus I need and more. If I am going to buy outboard gear, then I want it to be analog in source and feel.)

Re: The Stretta Procedure: Happy 2011

I'm glad I never deleted the RSS feed. I hope that it is nothing too serious or difficult. Blessings on your work in figuring these things out. Whatever the case, I have enjoyed your blog, your music, and your contribution to the monome community. I miss and will miss your presence as part of my "internet community." I will be happy to see you return if you choose to do so. Whether you return or not, Godspeed. I pray that you and your family will be blessed with joy and abundance. Thanks for all that you have given to us. I do sometimes wish that my arm-chair musical philosophy and theology resulted in anything near to an "arm-chair" like musical analogue to the kind of things that Eno has gifted us with. Oh well!

Re: Learning a new skill

Yikes. It's these kinds of posts that make me all self-conscious.

You can add me to your list of those guys that never gets to stage two. Well, that is an exaggeration. I feel like I know how to use, say, Logic, as a DAW, for my purposes -- I am not trying to be a groundbreaker or become famous or whatever.

But my Kaoss pad? My A6? Total noodling. Still.

But I am doing this for the joy of it as an avocation. So I think, for me, that I am okay allowing stage one to generate my ideas. That way, the noodling leads to finished products I could not have imagined "pre-noodle."

I cannot often achieve a match between a finished track and what I heard in my mind if I try to start idea first. But if I start with your phase one, noodling, first, then I make some stuff and take some joy in it.

I think, for me, that is probably going to have to be good enough, at least most of the time.

I am glad that you can get to phase two! And I love that you share what that produces.

Thanks

Re: Reality check

I find it interesting that two comments have already referred to Eno.

I put Eno into your "fill in the blank." There is a lot of great ambient stuff out there now.

I still think he is an amazing artist, but isn't your post a not-so-veiled critique of Eno and his ilk?

Re: More than the sum of their parts

Stretta, thanks so much for this great post. I am really starting to understand the "why modular" question.

Thanks to you, I see modular in my future.

I need space, money and time. I humbly ask you to remember us little folk that still haven't made the leap to max 4 live. I'm still just doing it the old fashioned way as a separate max patch (runtime 5) with monomeserial. So for me, since it wouldn't be "plug-in-like," the parameter controls would have to be midi CC (I suppose?). I always look forward to your creations. Until then, peace during this busy time of your new year.

Re: The pros and cons of various modular formats. Read my reply to Stretta, above, however. My situation puts the feasibility of just going for it into the (seemingly) distant future. That's why I long for some plug ins (or monome apps?) that could emulate this for me right now. Oh wells. Thanks and peace

Re: The pros and cons of various modular formats. I am not sure what is holding me back the most: money or space. I've recently lost a regular source of windfall that went to build my recently resurrected project studio. So there goes money for a while.

But another major issue is space. I've got two toddlers right now. I know I will someday go modular. But it may be at retirement! And then who knows what the scene will be like.

I'll still be counting on you for advice, though, Stretta. Thanks

Re: The pros and cons of various modular formats. An opinionated guide.

This is a really helpful breakdown. I still fear modular. And am strangely attracted. Some of what I love most about modulars is that they are their own entire self-contained electronic music system. Their CV sequencers, which can, themselves, then be modified by LFOs and the like, just make me crazy with gear-lust. For someone who can't go there yet: has anyone yet made, as plug-ins (AU, preferably, since I am still a mere Logic user) arpeggiators and sequencers that can be modified by, say side-chain or LFOs and that can trigger not just note info but also velocity, and, say, cut-off frequency or even resonance? Does that make sense? would it even work? If I could just get my own soft-synths and midi gear to do some of that wild electronic-music sequencing I could forgo the modular lust for another season. Thanks, again, Stretta. Peace

Re: maxforlive: monome integration

So how much does m4l cost?
