You sound MAD!

These essays are intended to spark debate and conversation, so I'm glad that you piped in with your opinion. But my intention was to explore the way this movie made me feel, which is how I tend to approach these essays, when I write them; it's not a review, it's not a story about the artistic process of the film, it's a personal essay that attempts to get at why a movie makes me feel a certain why. That's also why it's great to have such a wonderfully-written essay in favor of Synecdoche going up today: we're both entitled to our feelings about movies. That's what's great about movies!

The world of the film ("IN THE STORY"!!!) is exactly what I wanted to critqiue; its universe might not be a place I'd like to hang out, so my critique sounds like this. I can compare it to my own universe, I can critique it for what it lacks, and you can certainly respond to this. But, as Locke would say, "Don't tell me what I can't do!"

Re: Charlie Kaufman Week: Synecdoche, New York (2008)

Sorry, Cotard. The best part about Tumblr is getting props from people you've been reading and have so much respect for, and as a long-time reader of yours, this means a lot coming from you. Since the prologue is filmed in kind of dream-time, I had thought of it as a split second of recognition that, when examined in the context of the events that followed, was drawn out over an unusually long period in order to create ambiguity about whether the Woman refused to act or simply had no time to react.
The one sticky part, of course, is the shoes. Who was responsible for Nic's feet? In a way I felt as though that was another ambiguous area -- did he blame her for the feet, as Nic had been in her care while she was at Eden and he was away? Or is he to blame for his absence, his ability to shirk his parental responsibility and his ignorance of whatever was going on with his wife?

Your point is totally valid, but I ran with the idea that what happened in the prologue was not necessarily an action, but a memory.

Re: Villains Week: Antichrist (2009)

You can't imagine how much coffee went into this monster.
