Update definitely needed. Crashplan has become unusable on three different Macs in my house. Way too much CPU usage, erratic backups. We are currently looking for another solution.

A thought about what politics would allow for the mitigation if not the dismantling of mass incarceration as a means of social control. This seems a place where allying with the libertarian right might be part of the strategy. I'm no fan of Rand Paul but his comments on Ferguson demonstrated an awareness of white privilege that I wouldn't have expected. http://www.washingtonpost.c...

The current dysfunction of Congress might well preclude any effective alliance here but I could see Paul co-sponsoring legislation to undo, say, minimum drug crime sentences if only as another way to separate himself from the other Republican presidential hopefuls.

A nice example would be Franklin SD in Wisconsin. a - they allow students to bring in tablets and such for research and interacting with online resources. b - they also use a lot of Web 2.0 services (they are big on GDocs and Hangouts) as educators and their IT supports recognizes the benefit of supporting a wide range of devices.

I didn't mean to imply that this was anything but a minority but school district IT is definitely feeling the pressure to liberalize their device and web service policies.

I work in K-12 curriculum and I'm finding a lot more BYOD school districts.

You have inspired me to go back a re-read him yet again. I haven't picked up anything for over a decade. I had a stretch of years where I would immediately go to the "B" section in user bookstores to look for something I hadn't read. Which means James Baldwin was indirectly responsible for me reading JG Ballard.

I've heard this claim before. Apparently at any given time, 25% of children in this country are "food insecure" meaning they are uncertain as to where their next meal comes from. This 25% doesn't remain static and the estimates are that in recent times as much as 50% of all US children will experience hunger for a significant stretch growing up.

Not sure where they get those numbers but this documentary comes out tomorrow and is the most recent place I've heard them cited:
