Crashplan has become unusable on three different Macs in my house. Way too much CPU usage, erratic backups. We are currently looking for another solution.

Re: Books For The Horde: The New Jim Crow Chapter One

Many thanks to all who made the book club possible.

A thought about what politics would allow for the mitigation if not the dismantling of mass incarceration as a means of social control. This seems a place where allying with the libertarian right might be part of the strategy. I'm no fan of Rand Paul but his comments on Ferguson demonstrated an awareness of white privilege that I wouldn't have expected. http://www.washingtonpost.c...

"Anyone who thinks that race does not still, even if inadvertently, skew the application of criminal justice in this country is just not paying close enough attention," writes Paul. "Our prisons are full of black and brown men and women who are serving inappropriately."

The current dysfunction of Congress might well preclude any effective alliance here but I could see Paul co-sponsoring legislation to undo, say, minimum drug crime sentences if only as another way to separate himself from the other Republican presidential hopefuls.

Re: When Apple reached parity with Windows

A nice example would be Franklin SD in Wisconsin. a - they allow students to bring in tablets and such for research and interacting with online resources. b - they also use a lot of Web 2.0 services (they are big on GDocs and Hangouts) as educators and their IT supports recognizes the benefit of supporting a wide range of devices.

I didn't mean to imply that this was anything but a minority but school district IT is definitely feeling the pressure to liberalize their device and web service policies.

Re: When Apple reached parity with Windows

I work in K-12 curriculum and I'm finding a lot more BYOD school districts.

Re: Feature Friday: Personal Hangouts

I can also recommend Postbox http://www.postbox-inc.com for a better Gmail on the Mac experience.

Re: Is James Baldwin America's Greatest Essayist?

You have inspired me to go back a re-read him yet again. I haven't picked up anything for over a decade. I had a stretch of years where I would immediately go to the "B" section in user bookstores to look for something I hadn't read. Which means James Baldwin was indirectly responsible for me reading JG Ballard.

Favorite quote, not directly about race: "To be a man is much more various than the American myth has it".

Re: - AboutTheData.com

Thankfully pretty inaccurate for me.

Re: Day Around The Bay: 49ers Spelling Bee

Bad link on the second builet.

Re: The Sequester

I've heard this claim before. Apparently at any given time, 25% of children in this country are "food insecure" meaning they are uncertain as to where their next meal comes from. This 25% doesn't remain static and the estimates are that in recent times as much as 50% of all US children will experience hunger for a significant stretch growing up.

Not sure where they get those numbers but this documentary comes out tomorrow and is the most recent place I've heard them cited:

http://www.hollywoodreporte...

Re: Teaching Social and Emotional Learning

I work from the non-profit educational publisher, Developmental Studies Center and we have worked closely with Oakland Unified on social-emotional learning programs.
