I'm on the heel, and it seems off center... Does the heel really start at 80? Also, should there be a P2tog before the 2nd wrap (after the P10) or not?

I like the way it's working up though -- and WOW, this is the easiest heel I've ever done; I love it!

Re: QueerJoe's Standard Sock

Decided to give your sock a run (that's saying something because I typically hate knitting socks), but one quick question (so far): when you say "knit plain until the foot of my sock is approximately 2 inches shorter than I want it to be," do you make your socks the length of the foot or do you put some negative ease into it (i.e. do you make the length of the sock shorter than the length of the foot)?

Thanks!

Re:

How hard can it be to find a handmade, fair-trade, biblically-accurate, ethnically-realistic, reasonably-priced, child-safe nativity scene?

There are a number of patterns for them out there, but Alan Dart is a great designer! You can pick appropriate skin-tones and could even source local wool.....

http://www.ravelry.com/patt...

Re: A Back-to-School Conversation About Education

neither should we preference sports...

Re: A Back-to-School Conversation About Education

I think the sleep issue is particularly problematic in the US because we have placed such a high priority on after-school sports. Years ago when I was an exchange student in Germany, sports were primarily non-school based. Perhaps other countries don't have as big of a problem with teenager sleep issues in part because other countries don't overvalue sports in the educational system.

Re:

Love the blanket!

As for the state/religion thing. I, as a Christian minister, am uncomfortable with it too. My solution would be to separate legal marriage and religious marriage. Let religious institutions do their thing according their own rules, and regulations (and bestow whatever benefits or penalties they want on the marriage). Let the government do its thing according to its own rules and regulations (and bestow whatever benefits or penalties it wants to on the marriage.) The couple could decide for either or both depending on their preferences and situation. I find that a lot of couples call me to do weddings, not because they want what I can offer as a minister, but because they want what is offered by the government and they expect me to be cheaper and less hassle. The church, too often, isn't honoring its own views (instead, its just playing governmental sub-contractor) and the government isn't living up to its responsibilities.

Oh well.... soapbox... sorry! :-)

Re:

I notice that the two comments thus far are negative about the votes on the Belhar so I'll add a comment reflecting the vote of the vast majority of the RCA's Classes.

Although I fail to see how it matters, I too, am a life long member of the RCA.

In the end, what does matter is a deep trust the divine ability and willingness to work through the assemblies God brings together in order to faithfully do the business of the church guided by the Holy Spirit.

I have personally watched Ministers and Elders (at various levels of our polity, over the course of multiple years) prayerfully discern God's desires on this matter (often coming to conclusions different from their own personal predilections) and could not be more pleased to see that that the process has led to this decision by several General Synods and a strong majority (indeed, a full 2/3rds!) of the Classes.

Re: QueerJoe's Knitting Blog

The Red Cross thing amazes me at a number of levels. I got yellow-slipped by them a few years ago for having spent too many months out of the country in "mad cow" zones... I have a friend who got kicked out because he once lived in a thatched roof house (for a month, nonetheless!)

Of course, yeah, they're so desperate now that I think I've been un-yellow-slipped (7 years later...) I never *liked* giving blood but did so because I felt it was my obligation to, if I could. I haven't been back since being re-allowed.....

Re:

Essentially, the idea is that I ALWAYS wash my hands after using the facilities... unless, for some reason, whatever I touched while USING the facilities is somehow cleaner than what I would have to touch to wash my hands....

The sweater is looking absolutely gorgeous. I enjoy the in-process pictures so much I almost don't want you to finish it! :-)
Grace and Peace,
`tim
