After all, it is an open source product developed in an open way! GitHub is a fantastic way to get people started contributing, sure, and offers a way to spread involvement through social interaction. But GitLab is so much more complementary to open source projects.

Re:

New research shines light on scale of poverty affecting Greater Manchester

What's even greater is that you're allowed to say what you like here (as far as I know) and you have done so, thereby disproving your own first point :)

I wonder if you could point me to any official statistics that suggest a link between the poverty described in this report, membership of the EU and/or immigration?

It's important to point out that whilst we all have anecdotes about people, individual observations aren't data - and that's what this report is. Actual, verifiable data can be used to influence and change government policy.

A recent all party Parliamentary inquiry into the use of food banks released some shocking statistics recently: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/e... Amongst other things, the report shows that there is a link between people who are worse off in our society eating very low nutrition, high carbohydrate foods and ready meals vs making freshly cooked food from a range of ingredients because it is cheaper - thus people worse off can be more overweight. Put simply, not everyone can afford fresh food and are able to spend the time to cook a meal from scratch which can result in poorer food choices and obesity.

Re:

We should consider why when Manchester is benefiting from economic boom in some areas that it still has poverty and joblessness in others. Are our political leaders doing enough -- anything? -- to tackle inequality and to spread the benefits of the so-called recovery across the region? Or are we simply gearing up to blame Tories/immigrants/EU for everything pre-election?

Re:

Enter the World of Public Sector Digital Services Procurement

Having previously worked in the public sector, many of the processes you describe come from the need to minimise risk. There is an obsession that, with public money, risk of project failure must be minimised and thus everyone in the chain of approval needs to have their tick-box to say it's been seen and approved by them. This inevitably results in muddied requirements, long checklists of questions like "Are your staff terrorists?" and unambitious projects that are structured financially to fit procurement processes, rather than what might be sensible.

One way of potentially getting over this may be to apply for accreditation under the G-Cloud. It's a lot of jumping through hoops, many of which you allude to above, but at the end of the process, it allows public sector organisations to buy your services without having to ask many of the same old questions. This can also open up opportunities for smaller digital firms vs the Big Solution Delivery cos like Serco, Capita and Fujitsu.

Something worth investing time in perhaps?

PS here's a story for you. Back in 2009/2010, I recall having to terminate a relationship with a digital media supplier because the MD had described himself as a "hacker" on his personal website - a hacker in the sense of tinkerer, rather than a cracker. The IT department, having done "due diligence", decided that this was unacceptable despite it being clear that the MD and supplier were involved in "hacking" real world objects and tools to perform new tasks rather than attempting to gain unauthorised access to data. It was added informally, "What if the Daily Mail got hold of this?".

Re: 20 visions of life in the year 2020

One thing is likely - we'll still be using Windows 7.

Re: Spotify removes remaining 10-hour monthly caps from free accounts

It always used to be free!

Re: Spotify unveils a free music-streaming service for iOS and Android

Spotify used to be free for everyone!

Re: Google Maps now lets you preview international travel with images of airports, rail/subway stations

It's important to point out that many of these images are not taken by Google, but independent photographers who have signed up to be Google Streetview for Business accredited.
