Thanks Matt! Love your idea about smaller intervals. I also will practice scales using the following sticking: 2341234 2341234 (cross with 2) then reverse on way down. This helps strengthen small intervals.

Adam, thanks so much for this comment. I love the passion! And, i think this is part of the disconnect. The younger audiences see to want something more real or authentic, less stuffy. It isn't cool to yell out loud at an orchestra concert because you respond to something but maybe it should be. Until orchestras embrace this cultural shift in a real way I'm afraid the future of all orchestras will be seriously at risk.

Thanks again for reading my paper. I offer it up freely and I understand that doing this comes with risk of criticism and that is fine. In the end, I am confident it will do more harm than good. I suggest you re-focus your energy in a personally productive way rather than being negative for negatives sake.

I don't moderate my blog comments and only respond when a positive outcome is desired by both parties. If I don't respond to further comments it is because I don't feel this is the case with you.

That said, Percussion Axiom TV is all about interaction. I would always welcome your thoughts when presented in a constructive way, negative or positive. None of us are perfect but I hope we can at least co-exist respectfully.

Thanks Josh! I don't have much left of the mallet left either. Given that it already sits far back in the hand it really needs to be held near the edge so when fully extended it has good relative length to the inside mallet. You are right in teaching that... choking up too much can cause several other problems...

Hey Aaron! adding fingers (slightly) can be a good way to "voice" in contrapuntal textures, but clearly, this is a subtle affect. Not a specific technique that one should use as their everyday stroke...

Relax, Don't do it! (Sorry to go 80's on you..) OK, a show about this is brewing.. no way to cover this topic here. I talk about a lot a "default legato". This is achieved through a fluid motion, with NO tension, in the hands. (only enough to not drop the sticks). You should be able to EASILY pull the sticks out the hand. When I want some color I'll go ahead and use some tension, but these strokes I use much less often.
