Let's see now----someone mentioned the recent Rasmussen Poll..It seems ,though, that when mentioning Rasmussen, it is important to know a little bit about Rasmussen----important things ----Such as he is an Evangelican Christian who recently appeared on the Sean Hannity laugh- in. Isn't it true that only tea baggers take Rasmussen seriously ?

What about the Republican at the senate hearings this week on the devasting oil spill, who said that wind farms killed 275,000 birds last year. He also said that one wind farm, in California, killed 90 bald eagles last year.

It's interesting that the reasons she gave for her departure do not coincide with the reasons the Chamber president gave for her departure. The 3rd director to leave the chamber in 4 years seems to be pretty telling.

That extra time was not explained well, I agree. However,the new schedule seems better than what was happening before. But I sometimes wonder why the DOE mandates, but never provides, or bothers to care , if the money it takes to adequately meet their requirements is available ? Having the funds to hire 6-8 new teachers would have met the mandate of 990 hours easily.
I still don't see why schools can't run until 3PM or later ? What kind of learning takes place at 7:30 AM?

My facts are straight Lesstax. If it is the word "allocation" you have a problem with, you can call it what you will, but my point is still the same. WE WILL NOT LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL BY IN CREASING DRILLING OFF THE SHORES OF the USA. The oil found will never go directly to us. It is better to invest in alternative sources of energy .

For the first time I have to say that I do see value in the Tea party movement. There are certain people whose anger needs a place---an outlet-- and I guess it is better that they band together so it will be easier to keep an eye on them.

I agree that a 20% and a 27% voter turnout is as pathetic , unfeeling ,selfish and uncaring as some of the comments here. I guess it is true that you never know what is really in the hearts of those around you in church on Sunday.

It is so sad to read your story,and to realise that it all could have been preventable. It is so upsetting when I read or hear people say that drilling offshore must be done to break our dependence on foreign oil. This just isn't true. Any oil , whether in Alaska, the Gulf, off the coast of california, or from drilling off the coast of Massachusetts will not be used exclusively for USA consumption. The oil becomes part of the world wide pool of oil reserves , out of which is the allocation that our country gets.So any Drilling in the US is not for us alone, and will not lessen our dependence on "foreign oil".
What is needed is the development of other forms of energy ---energy that will not destroy the environment. Let's hope that all states take the same action that the governor of California took yesterday by stopping all offshore drilling.

My thought and my prayers are with you and your family and the millions of others affected by the tragedy.

Sometimes I wonder where the data comes from that says that liberals call everyone who disagrees with Obama a racist. I know I hear people say that they will criticise Obama and "make themselves at risk of being called a racist." But I think that most of the racist "worry" appears to come from the right. Perhaps the concern really is that they are worried that real feelings will become known, as much as they try to deny these feelings exist. Maybe if any of these people allow themselves to look deeply inside of themselves
they do not like what they see.

I agree with Ms. Penney that it's a shame we will miss out on the tourist income this summer. As for the comment made on here that we are in the middle of a recession-----that is contrary to what every economist is saying . Things aren't great, but they are looking up. If you just listen to the nay sayers you would never know this. By the way, to all of you who support off shore drilling, what do you have to say now? Or is it the same as Palin said a few weeks ago in a speech given in New Orleans..---" DRILL,BABY, DRILL.

It is possible to track down who is dumping syringes. I read of a case in PA. where a dentist was dumping used syringes from his dental practice, instead of paying to have them safely disposed of. They traced the needles to him. He is facing jail time. It could be a matter of life or death to ANYONE who accidentally comes in contact with one of the needles.

I guess that these people feel that having a parking garage near them in their town outweighs any "empirical" evidence that may show a need for a garage or the impact it would have on the city. These studies are not outdated ,unless they consider outdated to be anything less than 6 months to a year old. What was the date of the last study--wasn't it just last year ?

Read this stuff , and it becomes obvious why it is so difficult to make positive change in Newburyport. Past mayors and council ran from controversy ,no matter how small the opposition. Finally,let's just do it and get it done with. At last it has become evident that there is a long standing SMALL group in town that opposes any change what so ever.So let's recognise them for what they are , and move on .

Thanks blond lara for your wonderful posts. I do have to disagree with a couple of those that responded to you. As much as I dislike Sarah Palin it is unfair to bring her kids into it. Also, just because a woman has a child out of wedlock does not make her a "bimbo."

I'm sure that waterfront 's comment has probably already been tagged by more than just the NDN. There is too much of that going on already, as was seen before ,during , and after the health care reform bill vote--Like Palin putting targets on the states where where she feels the Democrat should no longer be in office. We all must take responsibility for what the "lunatic fringe" can do with our comments.

How can something like this be a win for the city ? Just like Billy's posts,these ads will now be popping up all over. I say like Billy's posts because the more attention he gets, the more often the tired joke is repeated.
There are two outcomes from this council vote that I hope will happen --

1.] people will never use the services advertised this way
2.] Cronin, Herzog, Derrivan, Ives and Hutcheson do not serve for long on the City Council. I will remember this vote on election day.
