I didn't need Sirius and I did get the chrome line exterior even at its stupid price. I hesitated on the Rebel Green, and now regret it seeing how black it looks. I really wanted that kind of effect. I ended up with Thunder Grey and black on the accent colors.

Re: Our New Long Term Test Car Has Arrived – the 2017 JCW Clubman

Good choice. The Rebel Green does look amazing with the black wheels. I kept the manual, skipped the leather, added the HUD, but otherwise my car is really close to yours (Thunder Gray instead of Rebel Green).

Couple of photos (not the best photos, but what I have handy):

https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Summer mode & winter mode (and needing a car wash...):

https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

Re: A reporter in a rural district of India uses WhatsApp to broadcast local news — and makes money doing it

Does anyone know how subscriptions are managed and billed? I'm so excited, and I'm looking forward to your take on the car. I love how you described the options - I agree with almost everything you wrote, including about the seats. I kept the standard JCW seats because they looked so unique compared to the other (arguably nicer/more luxurious) options. I did stay with the manual, though. After all, I did get to spec my own car. :)

Re: The Master & Dynamic MW60 Wireless Headphones impress

This is both true and misleading. The MW60 support Apple's preferred option, which is sending AAC over bluetooth. The sound is pretty good to my ears (I just bought a pair a month ago).

Re: Apple Hates Me. And, as that article points out, they seem (now) more focused on brand advertising, which doesn't require the extensive tracking that programmatic advertising relies on. There has been some turnover in the leadership for that business recently, too - changes are afoot, I think.

Either way, it's not a new change they made while announcing their privacy focus. It's stuff they've already had, that they were already better than most of the industry with from a privacy standpoint that isn't yet removed. Either way, call me a "lemming" or whatever ad hominem you like... your post isn't characterizing the situation accurately.

Re: Apple Hates Me. Almost all of their tracking can be turned off at the OS level, anyway, but if this circumvents that, I'd love to know about it.

Re: Apple Hates Me. Google sure as hell doesn't allow ad blocking of any kind in the Play Store. You can root the device, so there's that out, but it's certainly not easy or endorsed. I run an ad blocker on OS X.

The other thing is that this article is entirely all speculation about Apple's motivation here. The money they make "selling ads" is pennies. It's not even successful as ad businesses go. The WSJ article is trying to tie together things that aren't as clear cut as they might seem.

I'm trying to figure out how an ad blocker would work in an app, which often have layouts that won't reflow the way HTML does. Or, where the OS offers other limits on tracking and identification, which is one of the main reasons to use an ad blocker, IMHO. The apps go through review, and ad networks have to follow standards set by Apple that are generally very privacy friendly.

That's not the case in the web, and that's why an ad blocker is more important there.

Apple has their greedy aspects, and they can be inscrutable about why they do things, but that doesn't mean every move is about a few more dollars on the bottom line...

Re:

I am currently working in India and I've literally seen one other person with a smartwatch - a Moto 360. I'm in Bangalore, which isn't exactly a tech backwater (even if it's not SF). In south Asia more broadly, I've run into one other person with an Apple Watch, a German tourist in Sri Lanka (and funny enough, he had an identical watch combination as mine).

Part of this is that they're actually hard to notice (how often do you check out the wrists of people) because the screen is off, so it just looks like a watch unless you're really looking. Long sleeves also hide it (I have a fleece on most days, for example).

Cost, and indian import taxes, is, of course, the other reason.

Re: Apple’s biggest developer news at WWDC that nobody’s talking about: Bitcode

I think the question is what happens to embedded binaries, which Cocoapods technically become when you build them. Since they're subprojects included in the workspace, they have their own build settings. Again, I haven't poked at Bitcode enough, but if it does require the binary to have certain build settings set, I could easily see third party libraries not getting that setting and thus not being enabled for bitcode. Maybe LLVM can interpret compiled binaries? These are questions for a guy like Mike Ash...

Re: Apple’s biggest developer news at WWDC that nobody’s talking about: Bitcode

It's not interpreted at runtime but compiled at deploy time. I haven't read enough to be sure, but this compilation seems to be happening on Apple's servers.

Also, unlike Flash or the JVM, this path of using LLVM doesn't have the overhead of JIT compilation, doesn't have garbage collection, and doesn't need to do any compile/build work on the user device (sort of. there are a few shared library linkage things that happen on the Mac and iOS today at install time as an optimization step, I think).

Re: The Story Behind this Incredible Mountaintop Northern Lights Photograph

I want to know how his friend got up there? Like Hobbanoba, I don't agree with Scalia's opinions, but it's pretty clear that he's talking about the specific circumstances here - this appeal is weird, and if not for the politics involved, probably wouldn't have gotten where it did. The DOJ wanted to drop the case, the plaintiff got what she was asking for, etc. I don't understand all the legal nuances here (IANAL) but on its face, his opinion doesn't seem that inconsistent to me.

Re: Giving Away Three Stylish Camera Bags by Cheeky Lime and Locho

sujal

Re: Giving Away Three Stylish Camera Bags by Cheeky Lime and Locho

simple
