A Product Journal: As A Working Manager

I'm a working manager, a scrum master for the team and I manage a 50% product development slash 50% operations team (I'm committing multiple sins, as you can see) so I can very much relate to your struggles. What I've been more or less successfully doing in the last couple of months was nail down my schedule 2-3 weeks in advance. Even if I don't always stick to my plan or get interrupted during, having a slot in my calendar pre-allocated for a certain activity dramatically reduces my cognitive load and allows me to focus on doing the work rather than deciding what to work on. Also, multitasking does work if one of the activities is completely automatic.

Re: How I learned to stop worrying and love Vim buffers

I use vim almost exclusively myself and I do love it dearly. But let's be honest here, when it comes to buffers vs tabs thingy vim is just old and stuck in its ancient ways. And that's no a good thing. Human body is beautiful (male or female), human body in motion more so. That's one of the things we come to see at sporting events. No one is crossing any unidentifiable lines by choosing to dress the way they do. And there are no self-respect issues for women who feel good about their bodies and choose to wear less. If certain things arouse you AND you choose to feel ashamed about that - it's all the crap in your head and YOU should learn to deal with that and not blame it on OTHER people ("she was asking for it" I call this attitude).

Re: Climber’s Guide to Joshua Tree Camping – Part 2

I've created a couple of packing lists for myself, feel free to clone and modify or use as is: http://www.packwhiz.com/l/3... - general packing list, http://www.packwhiz.com/l/3... - climbing pack.

Re: Fear of falling, part three... taking it outside

I'm also a "silent screamer" like vegastradguy. Imagine that the slack between you - the belayer, and the first bolt is a smiley face. Then, the higher your climber goes, the happier your smiley face should be. It worked like a charm when I was catching the falls of the climber almost half my weight. Just don't go too happy, you still have to catch your climber.

Re: In the gym... and a fear of falling update...

Our lead class instructor made us climb hard stuff so we'd fall unintentionally. Because in the end you only weaken the joints/tendons and stabilizer muscles by not giving them a chance to develop. Taping/bracing while rehabbing is a slightly different story, but still should be accompanied by strengthening exercises.

Re: Is Ice Climbing Stupid?

Even though I was born in Siberia, for me being exposed to temperatures below freezing is a big deterrent. Like mixing potassium permanganate with glycerin - both commonly found in first aid kits. Or if you have a broken internal combustion engine by your side, you might be able to extract a few grams of sodium from its valves, then just spit on a small chunk of it and it will burst into flames (cover your eyes).

Re: 10 Essential Outdoor Survival Items

Guys, all these items will be useless if you do not have the one and the only truly essential survival tool on your person - knowledge in your head. It's nearly perfect for fiction (I am talking mostly about EInk technology). And it's okay for most non-fiction. Large illustrations, color graphs, wide tables, etc. don't look their best on the EInk screen. But my biggest grip is with people, not the Reader. I wish more authors who tend to write long articles had "plain" or "printable" view on their websites. Or at least included full articles in their RSS feeds! It would make extracting and formatting text for the Reader so much easier.

As for collecting books -- it's just a bunch of dead trees with dust on them. Get over it! :)

Re: Global Warming

I am convinced, that "global warming" is real.
