Their cost in the UK was about $12 USD."

This is not what they "cost," this is what they cost *you*. That price is subsidised by tax and national insurance payers in the UK, so thanks for taking advantage of your hosts in such an inconsiderate way to stock up on your meds before you went home!

Re: Adobe Photoshop CC Has Already Been Pirated In Just One Day

If you work out the cost over the average time between major upgrades, the subscription model will generally end up costing more. And it means there's less incentive for Adobe to keep coming out with upgrade-worthy new features.

Re: Video: The Top 15 Features of Photoshop Every Photographer Should Know

Agreed, but a) sometimes you catch the perfect moment without time to adjust your position, b) each to their own, and c) it's the end result that matters to most people, not how you got there.

Re: PHP Job Queue

Hi Andre. Thanks for asking about this. I've made a little progress but nothing worth seeing; it's still not a high priority compared to other money-earning activities. I usually complete a project like this once a year over Christmas, and I'm tempted to make it this one for this year. If you're interested your best bet is to keep an eye on http://sjdapp.com/.

Re: A rant against "end the auction early" offers on eBay

Hi Frank (or should that be Frederick - your email address suggests you're having an identity crisis). Thanks for your obviously well-informed evaluation of my mental state and social skills. You're clearly an intelligent man with a friendly disposition, so why are you complaining about Google on my website? Also, what did you expect when you clicked on a link that started with the words "A rant against..." ?

Re: Stut.net

ASP.net was just an example and is far from the most common skill in the emails of this type that I receive. Nothing you said addressed my point, which is that recruitment agencies appear to put the minimum amount of effort in to the job they do, and until candidates and employers start fighting back they'll continue to do so!

Re: A rant against "end the auction early" offers on eBay

Thanks for your wise words. In the more than FIVE years since I posted this I've made great progress in my attempts to "get over it," and with your encouragement I might just get there! </sarcasm>

Re: A rant against "end the auction early" offers on eBay

In no way whatsoever do I consider myself to be an elite seller (tho I was in the 80's - what a game!). I see no reason to be thankful for getting offers. If I wasn't getting offers I would review what I'm offering. The thing about eBay is that you can literally sell anything, and if your minimum price is reasonable it will sell. It's the greatest example of worth being driven by what people are willing to pay.

Re: Does Facebook Really Have the Worst API?

It's also probably the most used API in the world, which would massively skew the results of such an analysis.

Re: PHP Snippet: Array element access

In PHP5, yes. The type of database is irrelevant. Take a close look at steps 2 and 4 in the post. The update call in step 2 grabs the next available job. I've not come across a DB where this statement would not be atomic, so we're guaranteed that only one row will be updated with our PID. Step 4 then does a select call to get the row that was updated. Essentially the atomicity of individual statements ensures that a job is only ever picked up once.

Re: Snippet: Cookie class for PHP

Good point, thanks.
