I don't look at the app when cycling, but I do look at it in the house, usually in the evening to see what everyone else in my timeline achieved that day. Glaring white isn't a great option for that.

Re: Beat the 5p plastic bag tax – Done

Fish supper. This is the message EllisLabs aren’t handling particularly well.

All they need to say is "CI 2 Reactor is our mainstream branch and is recommended for all developers. It will get updates as and when required to improve security, stability and functionality. We will be taking submissions from the community to help towards these releases. Also available is the repository which has the bleeding edge submissions which you are free to use, but we do not recommend it for anything other than testing."

That would assuage a lot of the fears and confusion that are currently around. I know people complained a lot about the slow update cycle on 1.x of CI, but for those of us maintaining large applications that are in daily use, that slow cycle is a blessing.

As for Core, I'm not totally sure who that is actually aimed at.

Re: CodeIgniter 1.7.x, ‘Core’ 2.0, CodeIgniter Reactor, Bitbucket, Zips… It’s all rather messy

We’re talking here about companies that have month long investigations before doing point release upgrades to the in house browsers.

Re: CodeIgniter 1.7.x, ‘Core’ 2.0, CodeIgniter Reactor, Bitbucket, Zips… It’s all rather messy

This is a big issue. If you're supporting enterprise level software, updating every few days from repository just isn't happening because QC will have a suite of tests to ensure compatibility.

Indeed, upgrading to an official release is only likely to happen in the case where there is a bug fix that actually impacts on the live codebase or a security issue.

In production environments, you want something that is stable, trusted and not being updated every week. Certainly, a fresh pull at the start of the project should happen, but applications that are being used around the world by thousands of people a day are, by nature, going to lag behind.

In theory, these projects should probably be using Core rather than Reactor, but when the site gives the Reactor download as the only obvious choice, this is less likely to happen. It is confusing, even with more than a quick glance, and I think this is the issue Ellislabs need to clarify to developers.

That said, half decent code ports from 1.7 to 2.0 with very little trouble.

Re: Cameron says the Avatar extended edition Blu-ray is the last 2D release left... for reals

Does BD not do seamless branching?

Re: Apple responds on missing Flash in new MacBook Airs, says get used to it

And I shall continue to not use sites that rely on Flash.

Re: Apple TV jailbreak complete, next step: figuring out how to run apps (video)

Just like no-one made iPhone apps before the official app store launched?

Re: Election 2010 – talking to the candidates

When I first sent the emails they weren't listed as standing. What would the conversation have been? "What are your plans if you get elected?" "Oh, to stay here and not bother doing anything in the position I was elected for." Anyway, the birds is a fair cop. When I first put the site up it was a dumb weekend project which I didn't expect to grow the way it has so I wasn't really thinking about trademark stuff. Fortunately, with the addition of the disclaimer, everything that was planned for the new site fell nicely into line with the request. I'll be interested to see if TwitPic gets a similar notice, especially since they are directly using the Twitter typeface.

Re: Talking to politicians - Pt1

I've been here for 31 years and I still don't get it. I think it might be interesting to try and get them to talk about why I should vote for them *now*, without them relying on the past as a reason for election. With it being the European parliament I'm hoping that local politics will be slightly less relevant, ease myself in gently.

If it goes well, I would think of making it a regular occurrence for each type of election. Mostly worried that my complete naivety will mean I just sound like an idiot when talking to them.

Re: Talking to politicians - Pt1

Yeah, I think it will be interesting.

My comment on cars still stands though :)

Re: Talking to politicians - Pt1

I'm thinking that too.
