As a man, I have made mistakes in my life that would only fuel the mistrust women would have toward men.

That said, when I stepped back, I also realized my own issues of distrust regarding other aspects of humanity...

I found myself looking at older Caucasian people, especially in certain parts of Missouri and wonder if they're staring because I'm the obvious minority in the area. It was even sometimes obvious when I was with my Caucasian girlfriend several years ago.

Each time someone calls me the "whitest black person"--even in jest. It hurts even more because too often they seemingly ignore the Filipino-half of my heritage as if it doesn't exist.

Every time I learned someone had a conservative philosophy (since I consider myself "liberal"). I had to ask myself if that person was a reasonable, rational-thinking conservative or a stereotypical, fundamentalist, far-right-wing Christian ready to chuck "The Good Word" at my head.

Every time my eye twitches when a not-so-savvy computer user screws up their machine because they screwed up something I considered to be "common sense."

How I sometimes need to pause and evaluate my preconceptions of a person's intelligence when I see what I consider "chicken scratch" handwriting and typewriting that seemingly skipped the grammar and spell-checking process.

There are more, but I'm having a hard time recalling at this time of morning...

It was at this point I realized that we have still so much to learn from each other. Indeed, this will be a slow process, but perhaps we'll get there. From this post's main topic, I know I can help by continuing to stay my tongue with the misogynistic jokes and comments--especially around those I don't know. "Why should it matter whether or not you know the person," one may ask? With people I'm familiar with, we have already established the extent of the politically incorrect statements we use on each other. And even then, I may not be allowed to use such crude language around them. Respect it.

Now, I understand I may receive comments saying that the cumulative vitriol they've encountered will never come close to what I've experienced thus far and at a level of understanding that's unfathomable to me. Perhaps they're right. However, the point is that all of us have a level of mistrust for the other for different reasons. If I ever get to meet Melissa, will I ever gain her trust? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. However, the least I can do in the meantime is to gain her trust a step at a time...

In retrospect to typing this comment, perhaps what I've mentioned here is too broad to be covered considering the entry's primary topic focus. In any case, all of us need to constantly strive to gain each other's trust. Every day.

Re: Ping.fm / Uploaded Image from Snubs

^-^

Re: Ping.fm / Uploaded Image from Snubs

Hee hee!
