At a guess, this could be for a store in Battersea Power Station, where Apple is going to move its UK headquarters—there’s a big new luxury shopping centre opening there soon.

This just sounds like the Google Pay Spot Platform which launched in India and Singapore last year and seems to be in early access for other markets.

This would break optical zoom but could enable a feature that'd make 20 percent of users much happier.

Breaking a feature that works great for everybody to implement a feature that 20% (and that figure isn’t in any way real) might use sometimes doesn’t seem to be a good compromise!

Again, those are just things you wish were different, not “basic problems”. It’s only a basic problem when compared to an ideal you hold in your head of what the phone should be.

Thing is, most of these aren’t “basic problems”, they’re just things you wish were different. The forehead might not be to your taste, but it isn’t a problem; the unremovable widgets have been there on Pixel phones for a while; most cameras don’t have an ultra wide angle lens; 64GB storage might not be enough for you, but it’s plenty for me, and I also don’t care about 4K video; and so on. You might want these things to be different, but that doesn’t mean they’re flaws.

Google has been experimenting with micropayments for the web since at least 2012; their latest effort is Contributor, launched in 2017. Doesn’t seem to be actively promoted, however.

Agreed, between ads and GDPR permissions using the mobile web has become a painful experience. GDPR permissions require so much management and there are so many of them that I’m now just clicking them to get them out of my way so I can see the content I’ve come for—hardly informed consent.

The problem with the manual RT is that, when there’s a big story that’s gaining a lot of attention and people are all sharing the same link, your timeline fills with multiple copies of it rather than a single one.
A possible solution for combating abuse might be for people to be able to opt in/out of having their tweets be retweetable—and to be able to do that at any time.

Tizen phones are sold in markets with no app store / limited app store access, especially emerging rural markets, e.g. Myanmar. Sharing apps is a very common behaviour in these markets. An app that shares Tizen apps is a good way of making Tizen a more popular choice.

“Apple took the crown with a remarkable 31% share, Samsung was a distant second with 24%.”

There is a 7% difference in both cases. Why is one near and one distant?

Very interesting article, with some very relevant questions. A few responses:

Sorry for being pedantic, but Retina is Apple’s registered trademark for its screens, however this article applies to non-Apple devices too. I like to use ‘High DPI’ instead.

I’d argue this on three points:

1. Using this logic, CSS Grids and Flexbox would also be a bad thing, because you would also need to duplicate all of their functionality for older browsers.

2. In the medium term we could polyfill CSS variables with Sass variables as you’re advocating its use anyway.

3. The ability to interact with CSS variables at runtime is pretty useful. I wrote about it here: http://www.broken-links.com...

The other points may or may not be valid for other people, but point one is kind of silly; you can’t maintain eye contact with someone while using Glass, but the same goes for your phone, a newspaper, or a restaurant menu. Why would you want to be maintaining eye contact with someone while you read something else? And if you do break off a conversation with someone to read something else, you’re an ass regardless of what tech you’re using.
