Is it a Marketing Plot?

Hi Beirut,

A couple of things you should know about the Reddit Alien soap. A) it's in conjunction with Soapier.com. My name is John, I am one of the co-owners of Soapier.com.

B) The reason why Soapier was able to work with Reddit is because of this thread: http://www.reddit.com/comme... - Most pertinent information, you can find there. My handle on reddit is stilesjp.

From there, the Reddit community has let us know what they WANT. A Reddit Alien soap, that not only comes in Bacon (since there is a bacon subreddit that has more than 5,000 subscribers), but they also voted on a fragrance they wanted, which ended up being Orange (you can read about that here: http://blog.reddit.com/2009...

Is it a marketing ploy? Eh. It's what people asked for. Is it helping reddit? Absolutely. We've sold 500 bars so far, with Orange outselling Bacon by a 7% margin.

Thanks for posting this article, but as you can see, the story has a few more layers than just a marketing ploy! All the best - John @ Soapier

Re: Dumb Product Deathmatch: Bacon Soap vs. Hair Diamonds

Yeah... you wouldn't believe the clamor there was for bacon soap. What I meant was that the readers of reddit are more interested in education themselves than censoring, or downvoting unpopular opinion. It's still truth (to a degree, on the internets), it still gets through.

Re: !!#@$!!!@*!&*#$*&@

Jen,

You were coming to the rescue. If you'd like to change it to just coming to Melissa's rescue, fine. If you'd like to ignore everything I've said after your initial comment, fine. But you can't deny the venom in your letter was because you were angry over my comments towards Melissa and to the 'People who were never fans of Obama must be dumb kids with no idea about politics at all." I'm not sure how you can deny that. I would categorize making a personal attack as 'coming to the defense of'.

"We" are individuals who like to debate topics, not have a board whose singularity is as boring as a conversation with ones self. A group who spout off the same lines, the same POV over and over, is masturbation.

Your 'personal issue' (your words) was sticking up for Melissa. I'm not sure why you're taking what I said any other way. I merely commented on what you'd written in your initial reply. Sheesh.

Since you weren't interested in my other comments, I think my comment was quite astute. You're still not commenting on any of the other points I've brought up that counter yours, or render your sweeping comments moot. Nor have you even remotely taken into consideration my apology, nor my conversation with Hawise. So you're angry. ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE. Rather than the topic at hand. And, ummm, you state:

"I commented because you came swanning in to a thread with no current discussion and started pontificating all over the place."

There was no current discussion? The last comment prior to my first was 1 hour before. Is it etiquette now to dip your feet in first to threads? Say hello, see which way the wind blows?

In regards to rootless, your answer is already in our comments, and I never mentioned sides.

If you read the comments on this thread, it seems, from an outsiders perspective, that rootless is being picked on by a group of people for his sarcastic remarks about the direction of some peoples comments. People know him/her from another board. They don't want him/her here. I commented accordingly. AGAIN, this was all before Hawise and my conversation, which I then said "I will have to research this and come back to this."

And if you're not American, then this clears up much about all of your comments to me, and your coming to the defense of Melissa. I guess we can add you on to the 5th grade dynamic. I wonder, are personal, callous attacks and name calling against a visitor frowned upon on this board? For while I've called out a demographic of commentators to discuss their point of view (which they have not), you have made your attack very personal.

Re: !!#@$!!!@*!&*#$*&@

Ahh, nice feature, the rollover. Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I'll have to do my own research now and come back with an 'I told you so' (wink) or another formal apology...

I agree with you about examining plans and issues, absolutely. But I feel that reactionary comments of 'he lost my vote' are too easily taken up by group mentality. And we've seen way too much of that these last eight, nine months.

I'm all for people making up their own minds. No one wants zombies voting. But I find quite a few comments here very discouraging.

Re: !!#@$!!!@*!&*#$*&@

oh, and in regards to your second paragraph:

You're generalizing my entire statement, and were obviously so angry at something else when you wrote your reply, you decided to lambaste me and my comment with false information. If you'd have read it fully, you would have seen, as I pointed out in my first reply, that my comment was directed at people who said something very specific (in tone or literally). Not anyone on this board who was against Obama. Not people here who are voting for McCain. Those people have their reasons. I think they're stupid reasons. I think I'm entitled to my opinion. But the fact is, I wasn't calling those people out.

You seem to think that my comment was sweeping, general... a blanket statement. It was not.

Re: !!#@$!!!@*!&*#$*&@

I'm amazed that you read that entire comment I left, and all you have to talk about are the comment to Melissa and the 2% of the people who left comments, who instead of adding to the debate here, are content at finger pointing, sitting back and wagging fingers.

It's one of the reasons why nothing will get settled over the internet. Your personal issues here are blinders. You're not interested in my points. You're interested in coming to the rescue of people who don't need it. My points are valid. My anti-McCain 'rhetoric' is valid. My respect for Melissa is obviously founded, since I posted on her board. I'm not a troll. I was interested in the discussion. No where in my comment was I talking about people purchasing ringtones.

Her rules are her own. But you cannot tell me that banning someone for an opposing viewpoint leads to an adult discussion that is to be taken seriously. As an outsider, it's circumspect.

Perhaps I should have worded it different. My apologies to Melissa if she took offense. I considered it more of a suggestion. It would be very presumptuous and rude for me to think that any suggestion I made would be blindly followed. Consider it food for thought.

As you say "You say "We don't need you, too." Well, you do. Isn't that the whole point of coming here and spouting the "but, but McCain!" rhetoric? You do need the people who write and comment on this blog, and pissing them off is not going to help anyone."

I suppose that we don't need people like 'rootless' then, hmmm?

Re: !!#@$!!!@*!&*#$*&@

I've read pretty much all of the comments here, and I have to say I understand everyone's anger. I do.

I also see a lot of reactionary comments here. Lots of people saying that he's lost their vote.

I'm hoping that's all it is, is reactionary. I hope that all of you who are angry are writing Obama and expressing said anger. It's important.

It's a shame that there isn't a strong 3rd party candidate. Unfortunately, no one wants a repeat of 2000, especially this year. I suppose we'll have to wait for 2016. I don't think that 2012 is long enough to have fixed much. I hope I'm wrong.

This is a very strange time we're in right now. We've seen a lot of flip-flopping from both campaigns. Obama's trying to please everyone. It's a hard lesson to learn. For every Obama foot-in-mouth story that pisses off his base, McCain probably has five. I like those odds.

I find this statement of his strange, especially after the whole BAIPA issue. But you can clearly see that this is the only candidate who supports a woman's right to choose. It's hard to accept that these are just words, but I believe using phrases like "I don't think" instead of "I believe" make stances gray, which is important. You can't duck Christians, and frankly, he might have swayed some. You never know.

Of course, while it seems people understand the small percentage of abortions he's talking about, making any kind of legislature about it will be limiting for all women. And that's not acceptable.

The thing is, all of the millions of people who have marched, fought, died, for a woman's right to choose... they're all expecting us to continue fighting. Not only for this, but for the return of our civil liberties, for a better economy, and for ending this war. There is so much damage to be fixed. I'm positive that there are far reaching plans that have been set, to further our demise. One cannot leave a (negatively) successful regime like this one without back doors.

This is an important issue. But it's not the only issue.

Oh, and no offense to Melissa, but banning someone (rootless) who has an opposing viewpoint is a sign of weakness. If you're going to open up comments to the public, you shouldn't ban people for anything other than spam or hostile attacks (saying you're pushing for McCain is not hostile). Makes this a very one sided place to visit, and if you're not interested in debating people, then you shouldn't have a public forum.

And for those of you who keep saying "I told you so," and what-not... I'd really love to find out A) how old you are, B) who you voted for in the last two elections, not to mention all of the congressional and senate elections, and C) what you've done to try and change the country. It's very easy to sit in your chair and comment about a candidate online. I've seen "I told you so" quite a few times, and if you think the world will be a better place with McCain, well, the people of this country won't say "I told you so" while things continue to go wrong. I think they'll all be way beyond that 5th grade bullshit.

We already have to deal with the stupid half of the country that voted Bush in, twice. We don't need you, too. Pointing fingers is something politicians do. Not citizens. We're stronger than they are.
