Between their shared trip where Cal told him he's not OK, and Eddie having some sort of mind meld shared vision while Cal was in the cave that made him realize why Cal wasn't OK...how can he possibly be so unaware of how fucked up Cal is? If he truly believes that anybody can be saved...

I AM SO MAD AT EDDIE RIGHT NOW.

I really miss empathetic Eddie from Season 1, the one who actually helped Abe despite Abe lying about who he was and what he was looking for. Even the Eddie who could sell out an entire town to save Sarah isn't in evidence here.

Completely disregarding the needs of actual abuse victim Cal in the name of theoretical abuse victims. I mean, come on. If you're everybody's father now, you're proving to be yet another crappy father to Cal.

Sarah really was right at the end of last season - Eddie has lost everything that made him beautiful. I do not like I Am The Chosen One Eddie one bit.

If the writers really wanted to surprise us:

Lilith's people have a lot of guns and bio suits.

What if she's so calm because she knows she doesn't have to trust some lone gunman in Bali. She's succeeded in making sure Eddie's next big event is local. Eddie's going to die because her faction are going to take those guns and storm the compound and make sure of it.

Eddie's visions are usually pretty literal, and he literally saw people strewn in the forest, dead.

I am so mad at Eddie and Sarah right now.

It was a spectacular failure of leadership on Eddie's part to agree to let Cal go on that show. There was no level on which that was a good decision. There was no reason to have anybody go on that show. Sending Cal, given what Eddie had just magically learned - what the actual eff, my wanna be Messiah?

And Sarah withholding that she was the mole until the last possible second? What happened to the touching opening up scene from last episode, dear?

And then to show up after Cal totally crushed it, just like he was asked, and be, "oh, Bee Tee Dubs, we're gonna burn down everything you just sold you soul to defend, sorry 'bout the separation my dude, ok, toodleoo!"

I...can't really blame Cal at this point. Eddie having the gall to say that Cal wasn't fit to lead when his complete lack of backbone has lead to this situation?

My most likely scenario for the finale is we get a Who Shot Eddie cliffhanger, was it Cal was it someone else? I think maybe our friend Gede shows up to try to kill Eddie, too, which gives us the Bali connection.

I have a second/parallel theory that Cal's actually going to go after Senator McHandsalot. Maybe we'll get either two intercut rallies, Eddies and Senator Smarmy, and we won't know which one Cal is at. Or Cal devises a way to get him to Eddie's rally.

Regardless, he's actually after the guy he can blame for stealing his family because that's easier for him to rationalize than the guy who really has visions.

It may be they want to open and close the season with a suicide, in which case it being Cal's at the end makes sense. But I feel like we've also seen that Cal directs his anger, when he allows it to explode, outwardly.

I do hope there's at least some recognition that the old guard let these things happen to Cal, let Steve get away with it, are culpable.

I feel a little bad for feeling so cynical about Mary in my comments about last episode. She may actually be smart enough to realize no matter how much she cares for Cal, she's got to put herself and Forest first.

But really, I am so angry with Eddie and Sarah right now.

I think if Cal knew she took Forest along, he might be upset about that, but I really cannot see him in any way blaming her for killing the man he had himself almost killed and had threatened to kill. I can imagine him sardonically regretting she let him die painlessly.

I can see her totally saying she understood him killing Silas and then blackmailing him.

I am beginning to reinterpret her motherly behavior towards Forest as more seeing him as her insurance policy with Cal and a prop overall. She's been playing at being a responsible mother, but now she's seeing other options that come with a far better wardrobe.

Interesting idea wrt Silas' murder being a motivating factor for Cal to keep the Movement going. Do you think it's because he can then justify his actions as a response to Silas trying to end it?

I'm beginning to wonder if they intend to play Mary as irretrievably broken, possibly an outright sociopath.

Ironically, Cal's forgiving her for stealing the rings and all that it lead to might have made her worse. She may think she literally got away with murder. Even if the murder wasn't what Cal was absolving her of, she could definitely have taken his response that she must have done it all for fear of him leaving her as an invitation to be more bold in her decisions.

Meanwhile she's gotten a little taste of a much more comfortable life. Which leads me to think if she does leave, she's leaving Forest, because he would be a liability to her finding her next mark.

I would pre-order a DVD with extras SO FAST. Granted as a Hannibal fan I'm a little spoiled when it comes to commentary, a complete detailed BTS movie, and all that but yeah - deleted scenes and bloopers. The only blooper I've seen so far is the one on the 306 BTS featurette Hulu posted.

For real, the Cal/Sarah scene was amazing. And to have it in one of the little white rooms! Such a contrast to see them both there, being so lost, after the number of times we've seen them intimidate others in those rooms with their certainty.

I can totally see Mary starting a career as a baby sitter for high powered men who can't control themselves. I can't see how Cal and Mary end up together with where they each are, but not sure who ends up with Forest.

In the moment, the final Eddie/Cal scene was touching and it's a testament to Hugh especially that I bought it but...thinking back on it, I'm not sure how I feel.

That still of them actually praying is killing me because I feel like there was another beat or two where we get more insight to where Cal is, and where Eddie is. I'm really curious how closely after that the next episode picks up. This isn't the first time I feel like they've just closed a scene between the two of them that denied us as viewers the details of their interaction (also I just love seeing Hugh and Aaron work together).

Poor Hawk, no luck in love.

Really one of my favorite episodes of the whole series, up there with The Shore (108).

I agree with all of this. They've handled the topic of Cal's sexual abuse far better than I hoped. And I'm enjoying the development of Cal and Mary's relationship more than I thought I ever possibly could.

I do wonder if the show will address both Cal and Eddie taking on partners that are attracted to them, at least initially, because they are the powerful person who might offer protection. I'd love to see a good Vera/Mary heart to heart on the topic.

And yes, Vera really has been a fantastic addition. I really hope we'll get to see more Cal and Vera, when he said she was his sister...they both need family they can relate to. They're really the only two people who can come to each other and be like "I'm NOT crazy, it's our parents, right?"

Another excellent recap/review!

I've made peace with the fact they won't feel compelled to wrap everything up at the end of the season.

I fear we'll see Cal neglect Forest in some way that makes Mary decide she cannot depend on him even as the faithful babysitter. We've consistently seen Cal as the doting father until this episode, when he's so engrossed in his drawing therapy that he completely ignores Forest fussing. I'm envisioning him deciding to search for the cave and leaving Mary in the lurch with Forest and that will be the last straw.

And she'll be emboldened to go because he's shown her she can strike out on her own. She's a quick learner, we see that with her playing the sidekick in the Florida schtick, and then she does a pretty masterful job on her own with Congressman Buck.

Interestingly, this is what Cal did with Sarah, as well - suggest to her that the only thing keeping her from being a leader was not demanding she be seen as one. He has an ability to empower people, or at least the women in his life.

I'm wondering if Eddie doesn't accidentally find those pictures Cal surrendered to Vera, and maybe that sets off his realization of who Steve really was. Or maybe Sarah or Lilith tell him what Steve was, and Vera reluctantly gives him the pictures to make him accept it's real.

I do wonder if then they'll finally remember Eddie's brother, and Eddie will try to save Cal because he couldn't save Johnny.

Not quite sure why you think Silas' pronouncement that the Movement is dead because Steve couldn't accept his own mortality is the same as saying their entire belief is unfounded. As Felicia would say, she didn't burn her hands on a story.

And as Silas said, Felicia and Bill would be even more unhappy to hear what he had to say because they, as witnesses to the founding, would be even more resistant to the idea that it dies with Steve.

Small point of fact - we don't see Cal dig a hole; he dragged the body to the hole Eddie dug in ep 5 as the start of 7R.

I found both the way in which Cal kills Silas - in a fit of rage after being told the worst possible things he could hear, that that Movement that is the entirety of his life is over, and he is the same as his father (just as his mother predicted) - and his response to it completely in line with this strange, troubling character capable of nuanced exposition. That his first action after hiding the body is to go get Sean to try to begin to repair some of the damage he's done to Mary, for example.

Yes, he's a complete mess of a human being and has no business leading a spiritual movement. But I'm still invested in seeing if and how he manages to get out of this.

I do, however, want Eddie to come back long enough to grab Summer and leave with Hawk and have a happier life eating all the clam rolls and pancakes with blueberry smiles they want.

Thanks for doing these, I'm really appreciating hearing your insights.

Regarding Eddie being willing to admit to adultery he didn't commit, I think my perception is biased by having read every interview I could before the show started, that for him to admit to having doubt would be even worse. There's a rehab program for infidelity, but doubters get the Alison Kemp treatment. I think that's going to be made clearer in the coming episodes.

The fact that Eddie knows he was tripping when he had the vision of Meyer dying complicates it for him - he has doubts about his doubt. One of the issues I'm interested in how they address is if part of this transition from cult to more mainstream includes allowing doubt. Right now, in the era when Felicia can still show her burned hands, belief has to be absolute. But do they need to find a new balance where there are press conferences, no use of 'medicine,' and allowing people who don't buy the whole story as literal truth to stay with their families.

I find myself pretty baffled by the surprise they cast two actors to play Low-Key and Mr. World. It's like everybody forgot why that was so effective, for example, in Fight Club. Or even seeing it happen in the MCU, with Loki able to physically take other forms.

It gives the show a chance to play more with the Mr. World character while maintaining the joy of the reveal for those who haven't read the books.

Bryan Fuller has said that they have expanded her role to the point she's basically a third lead. At least one episode is going to be focused on her. They're expanding the world of the book, treating it like the condensed version and they're telling the unabridged story. Apparently Bilquis is going to have a much larger role as well.

The first season only covers about a quarter or so of the book from what I've heard. I haven't seen that they've said how far they get in S1, but they are planning this as a multi-year series.

I think it's a great idea. There's been a couple of great movies using this same idea - The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus (due to the untimely death of Heath Ledger) and I'm Not There, so I think to target audience is primed to accept this approach. And as you point out, it mirrors the way the comic books portray Dream. And everybody can have their dream casting for Dream, if only for a scene or two.
