And, from what I've read since reading this article, the 49 is in fact derived from the year the school was founded but much of the 1849er imagery is used to capture the pioneering spirit of 1849. But that's as much as I know on the subject, since I didn't go to the library and search the archives like easement.

Re: Daily 49er - Proposal hopes to remove Che Guevara from mural

I support the first amendment and I, personally, could care less about seeing Che's face in a mural. But I truly am disgusted by the sort of backwards thinking that goes on here at CSULB where criminals and terrorizers like Che are praised and any dissent is called racist or "conservative" hogwash. It seems like extremists, drug dealers, illegal immigrants and cop killers got more compassion from some students than decent hard working Americans get. And, I'm not a "conservative," I'm just a free thinking individual.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Troop-surge a page out of Bush playbook

I only wish he could have been wearing his Nobel Peace prize when he was giving his speech at West Point

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Too many blacks refusing H1N1 vaccine

Are you guys kidding me?!! You bring up Tuskegee, but you ignore the much more relevant Guillain–Barré syndrome and deaths linked to the swine flu vaccine administered in 1976? I know the piece was directed toward Black Americans but come on!

A vaccine very similar to the one administered today was reportedly the cause of many young people suffering the paralyzing neurological Guillain–Barré syndrome. And as you mentioned in the first few paragraphs with "women becoming deformed after receiving a shot" there are cases of this happening again with the contemporary version of the vaccine.

Re: Daily 49er - M. He's ran out of second chances with me and I think a lot of people. When I saw the Village in theaters, half way through the film most people started talking to their neighbors because they had lost interest. By the end people actually started to boo. I'd never seen anything like it.

Re: Daily 49er - Israeli spies frequently running covert operations

The Einstein thing I knew off hand from watching a documentary on the man a few days ago. More people in this country are overweight than are not. Poor diet, lack of exercise and a large amount of other factors (all of which are controllable) contribute to the number one killer of Americans: heart disease. The burden won't be on healthy people because they don't see doctors as often as fat people or smokers, it'll be on supporting people who CHOOSE not to be healthy. I don't see why someone like me who takes care of himself, can afford health insurance like 78% of Americans do, and who feels too much of my money is already taxed should have to support a population where well over half the people are overweight, thus unhealthy.

Re: Daily 49er - Health care – get it done

This article is a bigger joke than the public option. There was an AP article this morning about how many people, given the option, would actually take the public option; it's about 2% of the population. Imagine if all you needed to cast a vote was a 2% margin?

Here's just the first paragraph. You should read the rest.

AP Top News at 1:44 a.m. EDT
(AP) – 1 day ago
WASHINGTON — What's all the fuss about? After all the noise over Democrats' push for a government insurance plan to compete with private carriers, coverage numbers are finally in: Two percent. That's the estimated share of Americans younger than 65 who'd sign up for the public option plan under the health care bill that Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is steering toward House approval.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Moratorium needed on immigration cops

Let me get this straight: A father and his two sons are killed in broad daylight by an illegal immigrant who is a known member of one of the world's most dangerous gangs and has been convicted of felonies as a minor and had he been turned over to ICE when he was first arrested he would have been sent back to his own country, yet you are FOR the idea of sanctuary cities???

I know the whole notion of sanctuary is to get illegals to talk and cooperate with the police, but most of these people regardless of amnesty WON'T speak with the police.

And to say that illegals victimizing citizens is an anomaly is a joke. Jamiel Shaw is an example of something just as brutal.

There's a reason why California prisons are the most notorious for gangs and violence because we don't kick these illegals out once they commit a crime. These impoverished Salvadorians and Mexicans bring their culture of theft and murder here.

I hope you guys realize that if California cities didn't keep these criminals in prisons like San Quentin we wouldn't have the MS 13, Mexican Mafia or many of the now notorious Latino street gangs that started in the California prison system.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Governor slapped around by high court

Watch the show Lockup on MSNBC and tell me that those people look like you and me. No fresh vegetables? oh no! And yeah smoking a joint or drinking a beer should get you sent back to prison if you're on parole. It's not like they don't tell you this stuff before you're released. We keep letting these people off easier and easier so they just keep doing it again and again. They ask themselves "should I violate my parole by selling drugs or associating with known gang members? Well since the state is bankrupt and there are worse crimes than this why not!" California is a sad state. Yeah it sucks about cuts, but we really don't pay a lot comparatively and it's not like every other school in the country isn't experiencing a HUGE increase in tuition, public and private. I read an article about it on Yahoo 2 or 3 days ago.

It's like what do you guys expect? All social programs are experiencing cuts; it's not just CSULB like I think some of your staff believes.

If the money cut from education was taken solely out of MediCal, thus there were no cuts to the CSUs or UCs, you'd probably still be writing and complaining about how the poor can't get free medical treatment and so we need to revolt.

The reason nobody's revolting is because most people here aren't delusional and realize a walk out won't do much and EVERYBODY in the country is going through the same stuff.

I don't think I'm better than the rest of the country going through the same economic hardship, why do you all?

Re: Daily 49er - Capitalism not mortal enemy Michael Moore depicts in new documentary

You shouldn't try to "fix" the greed that exists in capitalism. Although it sounds counterintuitive, greed, or as Adam Smith called it "self interest," is actually what keeps capitalism balanced. Smith actually creates a distinction between misers and those who are truly self-interested. According to him, and many economists, government intervention in the market, through subsidies or taxes or any type of "regulation", actually allows business to become miserly in their action by alleviating them of the risk of failure. Also, regulation, by allowing an entity with no self-interest like the government to get involved with the economy, can actually slow down progress which would be made otherwise.

I'm not a devout Laissez Faire guy, so I can see where you're coming from on some points. But, honestly, based on some of your other articles, I was expecting a slightly different criticism of this film. Less regulation maybe? I don't know. Interesting piece, nonetheless.

Re: Daily 49er - Giving Obama Nobel Peace Prize lessens prestigious honor

This is a well written and well thought out piece. It's one thing to disagree with the idea of someone having an abortion in a free society that condones that behavior, but it's an entirely different thing to disagree with this decision on the part of an expectant mother and have your tax dollars fund it. Even though to the author those who do not agree with abortion, or more correctly "middle-class white guys," should not have any decision on what their tax dollars fund, it seems a bit unfair to ask "pro-lifers" to financially support such behavior then mock them for being out-of-touch "middle-class white people."

I think Meg should keep writing and take the criticism in stride; but she needs to realize that intelligent debate and thought comes from understanding the other side of the issue. And, like someone else pointed out, one should not take a stand on an issue as troubling as publicly funded abortion with ease. You must at least acknowledge that you have some understanding of where the other side is coming from. Only when you respect those who may disagree with you will they show you the same respect.

Re: Daily 49er - United States government needs to break out of two-party system

Agreed. If the past republican administration has taught us anything, it's that the GOP is for big government, is for more spending, is for foreign intervention and is for more intrusive government within our borders, hardly tenets of the libertarian party even in a watered down version.

But I do agree, the left is much more leaning toward the socialist/communist end. In my opinion, both have been shifting toward the left of center in a disturbing and detrimental manner over the last few years. And, the GOP is now more where the Dems were 30-40 years ago, in terms of spending and government than anything else.

On the other hand, the libertarians of today are more of just those who want to preserve the constitution and what it stands for. To me, it's nothing really special or even out of the ordinary in terms of what this country was founded on; it's just people that want freedom and their right to privacy.

Re: Daily 49er - Degree pursuit based on lies

I think you missed the point of the article and of the comment 2 people above you. I don't remember the name of the spread but it demonstrated scientifically how pretty much every conspiracy theory about 9/11 is false. It has scientists, chemists and engineers talking about how "regular guy on the street" questions like "Why didn’t the unaffected and undamaged floors below slow down or stop the collapse?" have no merit in this argument.

Actual scientists, not armchair engineers like Mr. Edmund have no what they are talking about.

One particular point of interest, though. The article concludes that those who buy into this whole conspiracy do so because they find it difficult to comprehend that a small group of regular men could do so much. To the human mind, they argue, government coverups and conspiracies are more fitting for such a major catastrophe than a handful of guys with box cutters.
