He does an admirable job of refuting the notion that ideas spring from the minds of solitary geniuses. Sure they can start with smart people, but they are cultivated, extended and polished by creative cultures that are ultimately shaped by their physical environments. Good ideas don't magically emerge from crowdsourcing and indiscriminate networking. They are slow hunches that materialize into view during years of reflection, tinkering and exploration of the 'adjacent possible'.

Re: http://f4fred.tumblr.com/post/2976366030

Glad to see you got Disqus working!

~Steve

Re: Nova Premium Tumblr Theme

Incidentally do you know what's going on with the Flash error message for music files:

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Did a quick search and this seems like a fairly pervasive issue across multiple themes. Odd thing is I only get this error message on the main page, if I click through to an individual post the file plays fine through flash.

~Steve

Re: Nova Premium Tumblr Theme

Perfect...appreciate the fast response! What we are seeing now is a drug pipeline targeting multiple sub-conditions. By trying to link the decrease in drug develop directly to the inefficiencies of technology transfer offices, the authors have not only highlighted their relative lack of understanding of the drug development process but also lessened the impact of their core message, which I believe still stands.

I believe that the thrust of their argument is that in the face of commercialisation monopolies most TTO's have little incentive to bring about meaningful service level improvements. Correct me if I am wrong, but you don't need to look further than the likes of Eircom, AT&T, Microsoft, the DMV (in the US), the HSE, etc. to see how effective monopolies have tended to encourage status-quo behaviours, with innovation typically occurring only after new entrants disrupt the equilibrium. So if you accept that monopolies are poor drivers of innovation, then how can you accept that TTO monopolies are a good thing for Universities and inventors? When was the last time you heard of a University TTO doing a customer satisfaction survey, or solicited anonymous feedback directly from the researchers they serve? I am not saying it hasn't been done, but it certainly is not the norm in TTO's, despite the fact that most major businesses use these tools on an almost daily basis.

A corollary is the relative small size of most TTO's, brought about by limited University resources, means that they lack the relative economies of scale necessary to specialise in every area that would be required to successfully exploit the range of commercial possibilities coming out of most decently-sized multi-disciplinary Universities.

I do not think that the Kauffman Foundation's proposal is a panacea by any measure, but it is causing everyone (as evidenced by the activity on Techno-L) to reevaluate their assumptions and start thinking about alternative models in a relatively young industry that has yet to see much disruptive innovation.

Re: Harvard Business Review on Tech Transfer

Absolutely, technology self-provisioning (#7) is increasingly becoming the driving force in adoption of enterprise 2.0 applications. It will be an issue that many multinationals struggle with, much in the same way that they have with their social network policies. The companies who are able to balance traditional IT demands with the needs of up-and-coming Millennial's will be well positioned to capture previously untapped efficiencies.

Re: The Phobia of Nonconforming Mind

LOL...think the general consensus was parking on toilets is different than parking at the mall!

Re: The future of technology transfer...

Received this email from someone in response to this post and thought it would be a good idea to pass it along....

Just to add to the debate. In Europe traditionally there used to be a right known as Professor's Privilege which applied in many countries. This has been abandoned as unworkable in most places with some residual rights in parts of Italy, Finland and some German institutions. I have a summary of the places where it applies. It was found that it made collaboration between industry and academia unworkable. Collaboration is meant to be the only way forward in terms of Open Innovation which does not mean free access to IP. I have first hand experience of trying to resolve nightmare arrangements with a Professor who has IP based on this deal prior to when he came here and its polluting/complicating everything he is trying to do now.

Re: The Phobia of Nonconforming Mind

I had an interesting conversation with someone from IBM's European VC Centre before I left and the feeling was that the ecosystem is progressing to the point where something like this would be very feasible. They are looking to do something around their Smart City initiative which could dovetail nicely with something like TechStars.

Re: Twitter Link Page

Anyone else using "Favorites" to tag links they want to follow-up on using their desktop system? It is functional but I end up with multiple pages of high-quality links which I am constantly endeavouring to reach the bottom of. So in addition to battling my way to a zero-Inbox policy, I am fighting Twitter-link overload. With that said it would be impossible to personally aggregate all of that information, so in this case quality far outweighs the management cost...however I'm not sure the same logic applies to my Inbox!

~Steve

Re: America, Obama

Ooops...for some reason Tumblr on my iPhone cut off half of my post.
