Good points from @Cycas. I think we're talking about two different solutions: control panel based services, generally aimed at hosting packaged applications like CMSs, and VPS/Dedicated servers, where you get an OS image and the rest is up to you.

With VPS/Dedicated servers, security is your problem. When using cPanel accounts you are relying more on the service provider for basic security.

Glad to help. I use fail2ban and rate limiting. While you're writing about fail2ban you might consider giving some examples of integrating web app logins. Most people install fail2ban and turn on the built-in jails for services like ssh and sasl, If you can get app authentication failures into a log file you can get fail2ban to help secure web apps too. e.g. http://blog.vrplumber.com/b... for Django or with a plugin for WordPress http://wordpress.org/plugin...

Good to see these basic practices brought together in one article. UFW also provides rate limiting after 6 connection attempts within 30 seconds, providing some brute-force protection (only ipv4, though).

To to rate limit ssh:
ufw limit ssh/tcp

For ssh on a non-standard port:
ufw limit 12345/tcp
