I contemplated putting pen to paper to write such a letter as you, but you beat me to it. Your thought process was exactly what I was thinking and almost to verbatim to what I was going to write, I even had my own clever title “Ban the Beach”.
It’s great that someone else feels the same as I do and wasn’t scared to voice their opinion. You saved me pages of ranting to get my point across….Ban swimming, sun-tan lotion, volleyball, beach balls, floats, fishing, smoking, eating, drinking, surfing, driving, chewing bubblegum, kites, bicycles, and as one of your readers put it.."Anyone who has a dog on the beach should go to jail”, or something ludicrous like that. (I’m sure that reader moved down here long enough ago to make them a local and have an opinion about my beach)
Did he just say my beach? Yes sir, I was born at Halifax Hospital in 1971. I am a local, and I say we take our beach back!! It’s time to revolt! Here’s the most common statement I hear “the beach isn’t like it used to be.” AMEN brothers! The beach management has ruined our beach here in Volusia County. And as I told the lifeguard that made me leave the beach (because it was closed for “safety”) this beach sucks!!!
It’s a beach, there’s soft sand, people in cars are going to get stuck, they always have in my 30 years of memories. I pay for a beach pass (which I shouldn’t have to do) and they close it all summer! Where’s my refund? Thieves are what they are. I love loading up my family, our chairs, surfboards, boogie boards, fishing poles (leave the dog at home) drive over Granada Bridge and the beach communist have my local ramp closed! Why? Heaven forbid there is sand down there! Oh my God, there’s water too!! Well, well, at least you guys got my (and many other resident’s) money. Sure, I can drive miles out of my way for beach access, but I shouldn’t have to!
SO imagine my frustration when some toll-booth operator who is collecting a paycheck, who moved down here from up north (we call them Yankees) tells me my beach is closed. I will not be denied access to my beach any longer. Take the beach patrol, give them semi-automatic guns, line them up at the shoreline, and give them permission to open fire on anyone trying to drive on the beach. So, now imagine my anger when some gun-toting lifeguard tells me I have to leave because he’s trying to keep my beach safe.
You want to keep my beach safe? Go wrestle a shark out of the water, jerk! Oh yeah, pick up some trash too! I have for over 30 years and no one has paid me one penny! Also, sir/mamm if you think I should go to jail for bringing my dog to the beach, I think you should admit yourself to a mental institution back up north where you came from; and save a stupid turtle while your at it.
In a time when we need to reconsider where our tax dollars are being spent, I think we should review the money being spent in running the beach! How many more lives have the beach patrol saved this year verses 1971? Or 1951? No matter how many beach patrol trucks cruise the beach there will always be risk! And to those who are inexperienced; Lookout! There’s dangerous stuff at the beach; like sand and salt-water!
Chilly Willey

Re: Rants & raves

You wanna know why it's not good enough that dogs are allowed in the Smyrna Dunes Park? Simple!!! We live in Ormond Beach!!! It's 20 miles either way for my husband and I to take our VERY well-behaved lab to the beach. Come on...he's a LAB for god's sake!!! He loves the water but only gets to go every other week or so because all you "yankees" move down here from up north and try to take over OUR beaches. If you can't remember when you could drive all the way from Granada to Flagler peir and have your dog on Volusia beaches you need to go back up north!!! Oh yeah, ON A SHORT LEASH YOURSELF!!!!!!!
