We came to this show in not the lightest of moods, but by the end were completely worn down by the spectacle. Really fantastic.

Great write up on the blog, MP, and seriously, thank you, thank you thank you NYCTaper.

Re: Fluxtumblr

Classic jam!

This is one song I'm bummed that they've dropped from the shows. Actually, I think we should start openly campaigning for an All Tomorrow Parties style throwdown of "Pig Lib."

Re: Fluxtumblr

I saw him do a similar version of Ess-dog at Red Rocks the same year. Lots of fun. You'll probably also find The Onion's recent entry in the Popless Week series interesting, as they tackle the career of Pavement.
It includes this line:
"The destructive impulse in some musicians can be exciting in and of itself, and it's easy to understand why a lot of critics and music buffs gravitate towards acts that like to knock their own block towers down. But after a while, the knocking-down stops looking like creative courage and starts to look more like sadism, spiked with an unhealthy dose of adolescent petulance."

Re: Fluxtumblr

I'm a fan of this (especially) and most Sharpie skin work. It's like the henna of the West. Then again tattooing is a totally different art form. This is a fantastic thing to have on your arm (w marker) if you're bummed. This would also be a terrible tattoo.

Re: Fluxtumblr

Fine in that circumstance, but SM's passive aggressiveness can get a little tiresome. I'm a bit happier these days when I see him and he's not berating somebody in a dismissive tone. Maybe he really does want to be Mark E. Smith with a steadier lineup and better guitars, and maybe that's some of his appeal among the nerd crowd--that he can come up with these quick lines that they take an hour to think up. Regardless, I prefer those audience welcoming performers, those that make you feel a part of it all (Jarvis comes to mind here, as do the finest hip hop performers) instead of emphasing the deep chasm between us & them. Or emphasizing the deep chasm between him and the sound guy, his bandmates, whatever.

Re: Fluxtumblr - A Hypothetical Question About Beverages

LSD, Magic Hat, & Chocolate Milk.

Don't judge.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Okay, that's it.

Word.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Okay, that's it.

Do you put Real Emotional Trash in that pile as well? Not that we need any more people on the Malkmus train, but I appreciate where he has taken it.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Okay, that's it.

Well, OK, but you're going to have to come up with some suitable replacement that has equally good costume opportunities.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a Furries/prog rock blend.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Jillian and Joshua talk about Girl Talk

Hence it being released on the "Illegal Art" website.

The difference for me with Girl Talk is how rapid fire it all comes. The Beastie Boys/Dust Bros were aiming for creating intact and coherent songs. I'd have to agree with you, Matthew, that most of the joy of GT comes out of a "oh, oh, remember this song?" approach. Some of the mixes are interesting and decent, but man up and try to make your own song, even if it does lean on samples.

Now just tie The Love Guru into this discussion and we will have a good start on figuring out why the bar is so low in American culture. Or perhaps the start of a book: "Enthusiastic Mediocrity: Why Dane Cook, Mike Myers, and Girl Talk are Destroying our Standards." Anyone want to work with me on this?

Re: Fluxtumblr - I Am Trying To Stump Your Brain

As I'm a big fan of the soaring guitar work of Nels Cline, I'd side with "At Least..." I love how that song takes some deep breaths before exploding. Plus it will pair well with the Cabernet I'll be drinking outside the venue during this set (assuming you're going to McCarren).

I'd also second the above commenter about Misunderstood.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Until The Day Is Done

Haha. I feel that.
2000 and 2004 never really had this level of optimism, though. I mean 2000 was a kind of general malaise and the whole Kerry 2004 run seemed to be fueled by good old fashioned desperation. Obama is no magic potion, but at least there's something more here than "Dear Jesus, DON'T LET US LOSE THIS." Unless your talking about your experience backing Ross Perot in 1992. Right, gramps? (kidding)

Re: Fluxtumblr - Until The Day Is Done

I don't think I understand what you're driving at either. There's different enthusiasms at work here, the biggest being a crazy efficient and decentralized fundraising machine which has now brought down the biggest Democratic moneymaking dynasty. I'm not sure why you're focusing on the "meme" angle, I mean, I'm sure there's some sort of "I CAN HAZ CHEESEBURGER?" thing going on, but you know what? Sometimes the cat does haz cheeseburger.

Re: Fluxtumblr - A rebuttal to 'Millennials' criticism: volunteerism

I don't buy that. If that were the case you'd see volunteerism rates drop off after the incentive (school or job) is reached. I've never seen a study suggest that. They also have voting rates that are higher than Gen X and it's hard to put a cynical spin on that.

Re: Fluxtumblr

word to the Brakhage.
