There is also the privilege of not having had an eating disorder that makes you completely disgusted with yourself even when everyone around sees you as totally thin. No, the experiences of a fat person in this fat-hating society are certainly not the same thing - doesn't mean the experiences of someone else are lessened, they are just different. When I was at my thinnest weight, I certainly didn't experience the kind of cruelty that heavy people do from others...but I experienced it from myself, every moment of the day. That is also a very hard way to live.

As a recovering (and not-totally-recovering in some ways) anorectic, I would have to answer no the question of "Could you be fat and happy" - and that does NOT MEAN I hate fat people. I don't give a shit what size anyone else is. Never have, never will. But suffering with this disorder means that "fat" and "happy" are totally incompatible things for ME. I am very glad for people who do not deal with what I deal with, and I feel awfully for people who are treated like shit in this society because they are heavy. That's completely fucked and wrong. But me saying that I couldn't psychologically be both fat and happy is not a referendum on happy fat people. Yes, I realize most of the people in that poll are likely coming from a fat-hating standpoint rather than a ED-sufferer standpoint...but both standpoints exist, and the latter is a completely different thing than the former.

Not sure which comment you were responding to Deeky, but - I certainly don't think he is *only* saying this out of fear, no. But a rational fear of escalated violence, directed at anyone but also directed at him and his family, is likely part of it, and I don't think that's a stupid thing to believe. I also don't think it's "horseshit", and I certainly don't think anyone commenting here should be dismissed like that, when if one of us said exactly your words we'd be taken to task for it, and rightly so.

It's really just not intellectually honest, though, to pretend there's no middle ground between denying even the possibility of racism and saying "of course these people are racist turds." It is, in fact, not even all that fine a line, in my opinion.

I was engaging in a bit of frustrated hyperbole, I admit. There's most certainly middle ground. You know that, I know that, most of us know that. But I do feel like a lot of these Tea Party jerks would take any kind of critical statement and magnify it 1000% and react in proportion to their stupid-ass view of it, rather than to what was actually said. I mean...they do that with everything. This HCR bill which most of us are like "bleh, this is like 1% of what we want" they're saying is the end of the world, and are reacting based on that, not on reality. So...absolutely there is middle ground, and I wish Obama would venture into it and not be as...hmm, nice I guess. I just worry about what would happen if he did...

The thing is though - imagine if he were to say even 10% of we wish he could. Imagine how much more frightening and dangerous these people would become if he did call them on it. It's like last summer when the town hall debacles were happening, and Obama said he didn't think it had anything to do with race. Of course most of us rolled our eyes and said UMMM YEAH IT DOES - but if he were to be honest and say "Of course these people are racist turds" I really believe that things would only get worse. He has a very difficult line to walk with this stuff, and I don't envy him that one bit. I sure wouldn't want to be in his position.

His statements frustrate me, but more so because he likely feels this is the only safe way to respond.

@Tiara - I really doubt whether or not Amanda Palmer likes Lady Gaga is even remotely a concern here. Personally, I don't give one shit if either of them like each other or anyone else.

I have admired Amanda in the past for certain things, and she gets a lot of shit from people for being who she is (I can't believe that some people still mention the fact that she doesn't shave her armpits. FFS...). But yeah - this sort of statement is like...so headdesk-inducing and so frustrating. And what also frustrates me is that, even though she's bright, I feel like if she were to be confronted about it, she'd get very defensive. I've seen her do this on Twitter in the past, the sort of "whatever, you just don't GET it" attitude, recently in relation to the Evelyn Evelyn deal. I hope she'll listen to criticism of this, but...we'll have to see, I suppose.

@livi - I heard so many people acting all snide and insulting toward myself and others who were concerned about the privacy violation, and yeah - they said stuff like you mentioned, and I was actually called a prude and told that I should get over it, it's just the human body.

Fuck that. For one thing - and not that this should even matter in this conversation - I'm not a prude by anyone's standards. I mean...I won't get all TMI but let's just say my sexuality is rather adventurous. I have no problem with nudity in movies or whatever, etc etc. But that has NOTHING to do with my own sense of bodily autonomy and safety, and just because I am adventurous and somewhat exhibitionist with my sexual partners does not mean I am comfortable with a total stranger seeing my body. I am in fact NOT comfortable with that, at all, partially due to just who I am, partially due to being a victim of sexual assault. There is nothing wrong with me for not being okay with this.

And then I think, I'm cis - I can't even imagine, as Jenny and dapht mentioned, what this must be like for trans men and women :(

Saw this last night and I was really astounded. I mean, I know Bush is an asshole but for the love of crap...

Someone said "Oh, he's OCD" or whatever, which...I mean, I don't know if he is or not. What I do know is I sure didn't see him wiping his hand off when he was holding hands with that Saudi king. So maybe rich hands are okay to touch, but not poor hands? Ugh.

ETA: I certainly mean no denigration whatsoever of anyone with OCD, and if Bush does indeed have it, I wouldn't mock it at all. But I know a couple of people with clinically-diagnosed OCD and they would never be so rude as that.

The worst part is that I fear there is much more of this to come. People who are this irrationally angry and narrow-minded and fearful of some imaginary bogeyman don't just calm down and start behaving because their fears are not actually realized. They still think it'll come to pass, no matter how many people tell them they're wildly off-base.

They always talk about "my America". Well, this certainly isn't what I want "my America" to be like. :(

Great pic, and I totally agree with you Melissa - Pelosi has been pretty awesome, and one of the things I really admire her for is that she gets endless amounts of horrible shit from the right, and she's like "Pfft, wev". I'm sure sometimes it gets to her personally, but mostly she seems to laugh in their stupid faces, and I love it :)
