This is the detrius from a discussion by the early crew at Eschaton: we thought we would post it and see if anyone is interested in taking a talking point and expanding. Filkertom wants to create a clearing-house website for such easy to agree on principles - for both activists and newbies.
(And none of this is written in stone - Monday Morning thinking out loud I guess)
1. A rational policy in Afghanistan. The deaths are escalating and no one appears to have a plan to get the world involved or what,EXACTLY, we are trying to achieve there. I am tired of wars.
2. A rededication to American values in the spending of our money.
3.We badly need universal healthcare at a reasonable cost.
4. We need trade policies that are designed to stimulate job growth - not protectionism, just realistic responses.
5. We need to cut the military hardware people WAY back and start having a plan for asymmetrical warfare that is both functional and practical
6. We NEED (as a nation) to investigate the shit done in our name and prosecute those who knowingly and willingly broke the law.
7. We need to have unions supported and the rights of workers strengthened.
8. A national energy policy that is geared toward both conservation and exploitation of alternative fuels as well as providing for an extensive, reasonably priced, and sustainable mass transit system(s) that will serve the nation as an alternative to either flying or driving.
9. Openness and honesty in our government and its functioning.
10. Reapportionment to make ALL congressional districts competetive: this will strengthen the "peoples" hands. These gerrymandered monstrosity have to go.
11. An economic policy that reflects the new reality of this country: the Midwest can no longer afford to subsidize the South and West. In fact, it is probably time for the opposite to happen.
12. A much stronger emphasis on educating the next generation for the jobs that will make the above happen, and on education in general.
13. A dedication to the idea that it is a good thing to take care of other people, and to clean up the damn planet.
14. A full rebuild of our manufacturing, communication, energy, and transportation infrastructures, with the above philosophies in mind.
15. A downplaying of the influence of religion on public policy, reflecting the fact that, no matter how many people in this nation are Christian of one stripe or another. not all of them are, and they should not be forced to the various flavors of grey-area moral code "values" of the majority.
16. We need to have all people treated within the law and traditions of the Constitution - no discrimination on any group of people for any reason whatsoever.
17. As all individuals in this country are blessed with its bounty, there must be a rational construct applied to compensation by means of a tax code that reflects the goals of a nation, not the elevation of individuals.

The DEPRESSION is continuing but I guess that doesn't matter much.

The government has to find a way to get people back to work. In this county we are dealing with > 25% unemployment and > 50% underemployment.

They have pretty much destroyed this state.

No, the recession isn't close to being over.

The logic of this is just loathsome.

While I am not gay I don't really think it matters all that much in discussing human rights and appropriate behavior.

I am a (retired) elementary teacher and I always gagged on people getting upset if a person in my profession was gay. To me inappropriate behavior is simply wrong regardless.

It was almost as if it would be fine if a teacher hit on a student of the opposite sex.

INSANE.

The problem is that inappropriate behavior is simply that whether in the schools or the military.

Damn.

The truth about the Congressional Republican agenda is that it is designed to save jobs overseas, not here at home.

No.

The point is to allow companies that increase their profit margins by shipping jobs overseas to do so.

If you really want to get into this the problem is that they (and the Dems as well, unfortunately) have been coopted by the businesses (Multinationals) who profit from the least taxes, regulations, and cheap labor.

Let's see: a quick survey of my world. (if anyone is even mildly interested)

Still can't eat much. I eat a few bites and then throw it away or give it to the dogs.
Can't drink coffee. Tastes hideously badly.
Signed up for the Snyder Recall Effort. I will do what I can. He is an asshole.
They confiscated financial records at my old school district yesterday. Honestly, I hope they find malfeasance at the highest level and send them to jail. I don't think they will, btw. Being incompetent is usually not a crime. And I feel badly for my fellow teachers and the students.
Still waiting on getting my "real" computer back. This thing is S L O W and annoying.

The problem (actually there are many) with HC doing this is that it assumes that someone has not stripped their expiration dates out of the content and offered it for free.

It is the bugaboo: they want EVERYTHING and will end up with nothing.

Simple greed.

I was in the dorm with my buddies. We walked down the local radio station, WHTC, and they had the numbers posted.

I was "Lucky" and got #28. My friends all had numbers over 270.

(Another reason I am such a happy American)
