Completely agree that most news and information apps do not require the specific app-only Apple APIs. That said, consumers - especially on iOS devices - are accustomed to the mobile app experience. Yes, you can web app-ize your mobile site. Still, adding mobile sites to the homescreen is not a common practice. One example of something we're working towards: most of our app content will still be fed directly from the app, but we're starting to build some mobile content elements and mobile microsites (such as Classifieds) once - and then we'll feed that content into the app by some app tabs simply displaying a mobile webpage - and all we do is provide the link. This will allow us to build something once, but have it work on both the mobile web and across all our mobile apps (iphone, ipad, android, webos, windows, blackberry). I believe the movement is towards web apps, but we cannot ignore that many consumers still prefer an app over a mobile site.

Very interesting, Amy! Nice to web-meet you. Yes, the story was widely visited and shared. So many people were directly involved in the accident or were nearby or were related somehow to people involved. A very personal and tragic story, no matter what turns out to be the cause of the accident. I was actually the reporter on Saturday night (I'm the mobile and social leader, but I work weekends about once a month). We'll link to your article from ours, I didn't see it on Saturday or else I would have added your story to our links box.

Why is this data only looked at as a result of Android phones? Could the drop in iPhone mobile web traffic be due to more use of mobile applications? Many iPhone apps are substitutes for Web sites. I agree that Android is gaining - but I would not look at this as simply an Android versus iPhone. This is also a sign of where mobile web and mobile apps are headed.

Thanks for the additional information, Tommy. I would call it an educated guess at this point. Sims 3 + server maintenance = suspicion of a June 1 or 2 launch of iPhone OS 3.0.

In this post http://mblapps.com/whats-ne... , I summed up all the new features of 3.0, these are the games that were demoed (I've added after each one if a release date has been been announced):

* TouchPet: By ngmoco. A virtual pet that you can play with, buy stuff for and you can get push notifications to play with a friend’s virtual dog. (ngmoco's site gives no date, only that it's "coming soon.")
* Live Fire: a multiplayer, first-person shooter game. You can send notifications to invite friends to the game, play with your friends and buy new weapons (like a rocket launcher) with real money. (no information on release date available)
* ESPN: includes text alerts via the push notification service that play the ESPN tone, video scaled based on your level of internet connection. (Nothing official, but this site XXL BBQ says: "Sources close too XXL BBQ have reported that ESPN will launch three true iPhone apps as early as June 1." -- more here: http://xxlbbq.blogspot.com/... )
* LifeScan: a management system for people with diabetes built by Johnson & Johnson. (Could not find any information about a release date.)
* Oracle: a business application for managing information between the app and the company’s server. (Could not find any information about a release date.)
* Leaf Trombone (World Stage): By smule, the makers of Ocarina. Lets you play a trombone, sliding it, changing the range and playing by blowing into the microphone. (Already released.)
* Sims 3: By EA. Has in-app commerce, letting you buy items for $0.99 for your Sims through the App store while in the game. (Launches June 2)

Nice jon on noticing that change. That is a pretty big deal. I use tweetdeck all day at work on my second monitor, so it's not a huge change for me. But, it will be nice esp when using only the desktop Twitter.

My favorite new feature has to be the turn-by-turn directions. A close second is connecting with nearby iPhones via Bluetooth.

I agree that red icons are nice and stand out. The one color I have very little of: purple. All I have in purple is the iTunes store, Bejewled and BlockBreakerDeluxe2. It makes it very easy to find these apps.

I'll agree with you Kevin that a formal app store may not be needed. What is needed is a way to charge customers for applications (not available yet) so developers can spend time developing quality applications for Android phones. Of course this can and will happen - but Apple already has a store with tons of quality applications. Ultimately, though, the choice between Apple and Android will just be left to one's preference between operating systems and hardware -- rather than apps. But for now, apps are perhaps the main difference.
