Actually, he wrote it (the main role) specifically for Zero Mostel back in the 70s, and had to shelve it when Mostel died soon after. Apparently Larry David was the closest he could find to Mostel all these years later...

...and as for him making a shitty movie instead of no movie, well, that's kind of what I'd expect he'd do if given the choice. I mean, he's made literally a movie a year for over 35 years now - anybody putting out that much writing/work is going to make some misfires (and he's had a few, to be sure). He just likes to make movies, one after another, that's his thing (he claims it helps keep him sane, from having to worry about real life problems too much). Overall, though, you gotta like his batting average.

So, yeah, forgive him for this one, but remember he's also made Annie Hall, Manhattan, Husbands and Wives, Hannah and Her Sisters and several other brilliant films, and then cut him some slack! :)

Well, to be fair, he wrote the film over 30 years ago and only pulled it out of his script drawer and rushed it into production fearing an actor's strike. I mean, that's no excuse for it to suck (I haven't seen it yet), but does mean he might deserve a little slack on this one...

I thought it was a great interview, not your typical fare. Gross, as always, asked pointed and skilled questions - not shying away from ones that might have made Woody uncomfortable - and it felt much more like a conversation than a hero-worship piece (as many Allen interviews, when he does them, end up being). I thought it was great hearing Woody in a more casual manner.
