Had the Subway guy's computer been encrypted using something like, say, FolderLock, could NewSoftware (the company that created FolderLock) be compelled to create a program that allows for the decryption of the computer? No one is arguing that the FBI doesn't have the right to search the phone. In fact, because the San Bernadino shooter used his employer-issued phone, all the FBI needed was the permission of the employer to search the phone (aside from the probable cause they already have). The problem is that the data is not easily accessible without extensive assistance from a non-government 3rd party.

Re: New Brentsville Supervisor’s office cost estimates rise to nearly $220,000

Couple of corrections...
Bristow Commons is not 20 miles from Beacon Hall on the GMU Prince William Campus. It's less than four miles.

Second, how does the "price go up" when moving off the GMU campus when the quote for a slightly small space at Bristow Commons is over $80,000 less (~$92/sq foot at GMU, ~$83/sq foot at Bristow Commons for 1,220 sq ft, and ~$87/sq foot for 2,500 sq feet--both LESS than GMU)?
And $50,000 to wire a 2,000 sq foot office? It was under $15,000 to wire Candland's office. Why the 300+% increase in just two years?

Re: Cross Raises Worries Over NJ Town's 9/11 Memorial

As a Christian, I find the statement "...the cross is a symbol of remembrance and has nothing to do with religion..." insulting. The cross IS a symbol of Christianity and to secularize its meaning diminishes it for those who practice the faith. With that said, the pillar should be turned so the cross is hidden. The planned memorial has the pillar sandwiched between two limestone slabs, so it would be quite easy to turn it so the cutout of the cross is hidden. The cross was cut out of the pillar after 9/11. And, since most won't click through to the Times of Trenton article, Mr. James is Jewish so this isn't about his desire to "promote" Christianity.

Re: 600,000 Americans have 'megacommutes' of over 90 minutes

Or, how about a carbon tax that goes into improving infrastructure and public transit? I worked for 10 years at a place 30 miles from my house. I really had no options except to drive myself. Had there been public transportation, I'd have jumped at the opportunity. Today, I live in the same place but have a job 12 miles further away than the old one. But I actually like my commute--I can take the train.

Re: 600,000 Americans have 'megacommutes' of over 90 minutes

Tell that to all those "knowledge workers" at Yahoo that just had their telecommuting program yanked away.

Re: Apple Willow Glass “iWatch” smartwatch could be very curved indeed

The manufacturer is "lucky" to make money? I'd suggest an econ or basic business course. No manufacturer is in business to be "lucky" to make money. You don't think Samsung marks up their devices? Or Nokia?

Re: Vivek Haldar : On Vagueness

And even there, they release before it's "perfect." Look at the iOS app history. Initially, the iPhone only support Apple apps and 3rd party Web apps. Now the iOS app marketplace is huge. Apple learned from the initial failure to provide 3rd party native app access.

Re: Amazon Finally Challenges the iPad, With the $200 Kindle Fire

Im interested in the cross-content question. In an earlier reply, you said you'd be able to store non-Amazon digital content in the Amazon cloud. What's your source? What what I've seen, only Amazon content will go to the cloud while your non-Amazon, DRM-free content can be loaded onto the device itself, but not moved to the cloud.

Re: The Kindle Fire Isn’t an iPad Killer, It’s a Non-iPad Tablet Mauler

I understand all of your points here except the "walled garden" comment. If anything, the wall around the Fire garden is much higher than anything Apple has created. Want content? It's gotta be from Amazon (unless you can fit it on the measly 8GB of internal memory. Want apps? They have to come from the Amazon App Store. Want to browse the web? You have to do it through Amazon's cloud. Want streaming video? It has to come from Amazon Prime video (oh, and that will be $79 a year, thank you).

Let's be clear, part of the reason Amazon can come in at $199 on this is that they know they'll make it back from the forced eco-system.

Re: Stimulate you brain and win a free twitter background!

1.
