Yes, the South has had a detrimental effect on our politics and culture. I prefer that over another hundred years of slavery and ongoing segregation. Too bad we couldn't have annexed Canada to offset the negative effects of the South. (I would still like the countries to merge.)

You do know that the original play is rife with historical inaccuracies, right? They didn't escape by Blackhawk Helicopter, but they did escape by crossing a mountain (in real life the von Trapps escaped by train) into Switzerland (in reality, Germany is on the other side of the mountain). This is just one of many examples. Do most people care? No. It's a great story and doesn't claim to be history.

Or maybe they weren't thinking about race, and just got the best singer/actor for the role. Austrians didn't speak English back then, either. This isn't a historical document. Audra McDonald was fabulous as Mother Superior, and the only ones offended are racist whites.

Much like the recent anti-gay laws in Russia, those Constitutional amendments were enacted only when conservatives saw the progress gay rights were making. They are the last gasp of a dying, intolerant right-wing culture. They will fall, one by one. It has already begun.
