I can argue that the people who manage to stick around on your heavy activity stream for more than two weeks are the 'right' people. However, there's a limit to what people share about themselves, so after a while, a network can grow stale, with the same kinds of information being passed around over and over - directly affecting the value you extract out of it. At that point, you will have to refresh your network or slowly succumb to a relatively unexciting stream of news and events.

The challenge, then is to systematically *refine* and *strengthen* your network by actively pruning folks who provide little value to your daily information feed, consistently add more people to your network who you find interesting, and actually *communicate* extensively with the people who make the cut. Rinse, repeat, and follow through with the opportunities that present themselves via these networks, and you'll open up more doors.

Re: XMPP Meetup at SXSW 2009 in Austin

Sounds awesome, but I won't be at SXSW this year :(
I'll definitely try to make it next year though!

Re: ruby_bosh - an XMPP BOSH session initializer - Intridea Company Blog

There's a hard timeout in the library itself for now, which throws an exception if things don't go well. I'm sure that process can be improved though, so feel free to take a shot at it and submit a pull request if you're so inclined :)

Re: Getting Attached To Strophe

I wrote a gem for ruby web applications that pre-initializes BOSH sessions.
You can find it at http://github.com/skyfallsi...
If you'd like to help improve it, please fork and submit a pull request.

Jack, thanks for the great example :)

Re: Why XMPP will be huge very soon

Julien,
I agree with the need for a robust desktop client that can handle most of the spec in an elegant way, and I'm thankful that as developers we're not too constrained by that requirement. I have to say that most Ruby libraries for XMPP development are quite shoddy -- Babylon looks promising though :)

Looking forward to meeting you later this week at the first SF XMPP meetup!
