Our conversation on choreographic sensibilities still resonates.

Claudia

Re: The Art of Sabbatical - A selection of properties, which could apply to...

Hi Simon. I hope to publish my thoughts about these diagrams in some form later this year. Meanwhile I have had very positive responses particularly at the Bristol Symposium, mostly because these maps allow us to get past the old identification of 'Videodance' versus 'Cinedance', and instead get us to think of the a work in terms of choreographic sensibilities, which are applied to any of the elements of a production.

Holes; terms such as Real-time Choreography borrow from Fine Art conventions of naming practices. Are they good enough to address the complexities of these audio-visual-kinaesthetic works? Laban developed his visual Kinetography because he felt that words would not be able to take on board all that is contained in movement. Perhaps we could come up with a more visual form of mapping for Screendance, but meanwhile this 'Screendance Effort Graph' has some use I think.

Re: Critical Moves

Hi Harmony
I think we agree in the reading of Lepecki and you summerize his thesis very succinctly. With regards to your critique of his proposition of the still act; I think you are right in arguing that stillness could lead to paralysis and I have found myself in the corner. However, we can view his proposition as a necessary step along the way to an expansion of dance, that is an ‘incorporation’ of stillness into the language of dance, rather than a reduction of dance to it. In other words, rather than moving for its own sake the question is when to move (and how) and when to be still (and how).
Claudia

Re: The Art of Sabbatical - Q&A: Do you think that throughout time and history...

Hi Suzon
How nice you remember her. I also like this 'embodiment' of stillness and movement, a strange kind of endurance in stone. Since doing a project in the quarry on the Isle of Portland I am very aware that stone is only on a much slower timeframe than us, it seizes to be an object. All the best for your explorations too.

Re: The Art of Sabbatical - Why does Bataille speak of non-knowledge (Inner...

Hi Suzon
I guess this is the kind of observation and reflecting that happens when there is time, ie on sabbatical. How is yours going? One thing I learned from this year is that going away from home is key to changing one's mode and frame of mind. The time I have now during the residency in Munich has allowed for many new developments, new ideas, a different kind of focus and concentration, a chance to push my boundaries....All of this would be much more difficult or at least much slower if I was at home.

Re: Cairon 11, Body and Cinematography

Unfortunately not, I only red the copy I was sent by Ann Cooper Albright.
