I don't have a lot of experiences with watches in general, but I would like to put in a word for Orient watches, as I have a couple and love them ... I'm not paid by Orient or anything, just a big fan... Orient is a subsidiary of Seiko Epson, so even though they're not a well-known brand, they can be counted on to make a quality gadget. These are automatic watches (self-winding) so battery function is never a concern. There are a large variety of styles using the same set of movements. On sale, they can be had for around $100-$200, depending on the style and seller, via Amazon. They're a really great value.

I also do the garbage bag thing... but for what it's worth, in the product photos on Amazon, the barrier between the two sides in this bag appears to be oversized so that you can stuff the bag full even if you're only using one side.
