It was only recently that "everyone" got onto Facebook, when only a few years prior MySpace was the go-to social networking site where "everyone" was.

But as history shows us, all that's necessary is a tipping point to get everyone to start rushing towards another social site. Twitter definitely isn't as popular as it seems outside the Valley folk, but with everyone from Obama to Ashton Kutcher to the Dali llama reaching out in a causual, micro-blogging manner via Twitter, I wouldn't be surprised to see Twitter become common amongst the kiddos. Plus, Facebook's friending relationship (mutual) isn't as flexible as twitters one-way follow policy, allowing more relationships to develop without the 'friending' pressure.

You could be right. Twitter might die in a while, but I think it's a bit too soon to say it's *dead*!

Re: What do 400 college students know anyway?

*ahem* I'm going to have to disagree with this one. First of all, studies show that Facebook isn't "older", but that the roots of its demographics stem typically from folks who are in a higher socioeconomic class. This was established by Facebook's tipping point mechanism, starting with the private colleges across the US and slowly opening the networks to High Schools and people with jobs, and finally globally. I think this is where the 'more-seasoned' quality comes from, whereas MySpace's demographic is made up of lower socioeconomic classes.

But when Facebook opened its doors to High schoolers after it finished all the colleges, tons of highschool students who had wanted their own facebook rushed on, so Facebook is still inherently young. I have a younger sister who was part of this crowd when it happened, and they carried over all the same behaviors from MySpace that they could within Facebook's restraints. Rapid friending, constant comments and pic appraisals, etc. So yes, they can't customize their pages with glitter .gifs and ponies, but their web-ego-maniac-behaviors remain more or less the same.

Anyway. Facebook crowds and MySpace crowds are inherently different as you say, but for different reasons that you mentioned. Now that most people are using Facebook as the go-to online identity, I wouldn't be surprised to see MySpace dwindle and Facebook triumph in the end. *wouf*

Re: What do 400 college students know anyway?

@the letter H I have to disagree with you're assumptions about the MySpace vs. Facebook crowd.
