From what I understand, symbolism, like theme, is often unconscious and an after-thought. I use weather as a symbol on occasion - a storm that represents/reflects the turmoil in the story/character. I often choose names very specifically, names that have certain meanings and that convey a certain feel/tone just by the way they sound. (Sometimes the name will tell you what's coming with that character if you know what it means or where it comes from.) I also use symbolism in the title of a lot of my stories. "Dying Light" says a lot about the story that you'll understand once you've read it. The same goes for "Unreal", "River" and "Falling Snow". Once you've read them, you get it because the titles symbolize the soul of the tale.

I guess it all comes down to the "why". Why does one person blog and the other does not? What the purpose? What's the goal?

I do blog, and I've been blogging since I got divorced. It was my way to cope with the loss, which evolved into short stories and now novels. I still blog, but I don't blog about my books (very much). I mostly write about social and political issues, sussing things out for myself and looking at the world critically. Here and there are short stories, cute anecdotes, and mentions of my novels appear, but if I am not giving the novels enough attention, the "blogging" is the first thing to go.

I've never given much thought to writing for larger platforms simply because I write for myself, but I have been invited to write for others. I've just not taken advantage of it. I have 3-4 novels claiming precedent in my head, and they win. If anything besides just personal enjoyment, I hope that my writing on my blog gives someone who might want to read me something to look at, a broader body of work and a greater insight into who I am as an author outside of writing. What kind of person am I? You can find that out quickly on my blog. And maybe you'll notice that I'm a pretty good storyteller, too.

Oddly, my quiet zone is at the office. I work in a secure environment where we don't have access to the internet, my cell, etc., and it's there that I find I have time to think, not just react. Also, because I walk there (about a mile), that is even more quiet time, time that I find myself using to write entire conversations or chapters in my head for this or that novel. Yes, it's when I'm isolated that my brain feels like it has a nice break to do it's own thing.

you know, Ron Paul is a really smart guy, but he's so warped by his anti-government/anti-monetary policy posturing that he can't even come across as intelligent in any discussion outside of those two issues. mass home-schooling? hell, who is qualified to even do that? considering how many people can't even answer basic questions on stupid game shows (not to mention the millions who couldn't get through Jeopardy without phoning 10 friends), how many parents even have the knowledge to adequately teach their children? hardly any. poor Ron Paul; he simply can't see the reality behind his rhetoric.

Wow, do you really think you know me well enough to insult me? Who the hell are you? I have an opinion and that opinion was directed at the article. The article, like all of them, tells us that this is a disaster. I'm saying, 'hey, we all know this; show me solutions.' But all you can say is that I'm narrow-minded. Do you even understand my comment? Obviously not because instead of considering that I might have a good point of view, you decided for whatever reason to be defensive, and then you attacked me in a way that is not only completely unrelated to anything I said, it's also just plain silly considering that we are probably on the same side on this issue. Maybe you should catch a clue and slow down and stop throwing accusations and insults around when you don't even understand another person's comment. The last thing we need is crap like that.

I got burned on pimping something last week that a bunch of left-of-center bloggers chirped and it turned out to have no basis after I spent over an hour researching it. Hey, Kevin, can you point to the exact bill and show me where it is? I've been searching the Texas Legislature database for 30 mins for it, and the only HB2012 I can find is from 2009 about driving with an invalid license. Really, I'd just like to see the bill, and maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. I'm not trying to blow up this blog or anything, I just wanna see it, and I can't find it anywhere at all. Tks!

very cool. i prefer to live alone myself, and even in my rather small Baltimore rowhome, i think i have too much space. besides, if you or i get to feeling squeezed by space, we can always just step right outside our door and voila! hundreds of other spaces to go into.

Don't worry. I'm just as ignorant, although at least I have a little understanding of the Koran and Islam, too. I am pretty fascinated by religion, and I love reading non-fiction and fiction that is specifically about it or is heavily influenced by it. I like to see how it drives people to be who they are. That's the only thing I'm really interested in with regard to religion and it's guidebooks, if you will. I suppose if I really wanted to better understand "The Hyperion Cantos", a favorite sci-fi book, I could read some Keats since he is quoted quite often in those novels, but I just don't have the time or inclination to do it. Since your work is more closely related to the Bible, it's good to see that you have finally had a chance to back-fill, so to speak, and now you'll be able to 'get it' a little better when you come across an obvious Biblical reference or quote. Otherwise, I think we're all enrolled in some kind of "Bible study" our whole lives, although I don't think we'll ever know the answers to the test.
