Golden opportunity to put the pressure on Speaker Smith to form an "INDEPENDENT" commission against corruption, then the corrupt polis would be too scared to sneakily change the rules.

Independent means no current or ex politicians, judges, public servants.

Government spending cuts are what is required.

It is government that has got us into this mess. Govermment has all the policy analysts etc at its beck and call.

TIME THAT THEY ALL LOOKED OUTSIDE THE SQUARE for the right solutions. NOT LOOKING AT WHAT THEY THINK ARE VOTE CATCHING POLICIES

You have summed up exactly where this country is.

It is dumbness to allow the present system to remain.

It is dumbness to keep on taxing the productive sector to maintain our beauracraticly run welfare system.

It is dumbness when the populous more and more feel that the government owes them something.

The rot has got to be stopped and hard decisions have to be made fast.

Leaving the system the way it is is totally gutless and certainly will not improve the lives of thousands of New Zealanders.

Won't make any difference who has the finance role. There just does not seem to be any desire from this government to make the necessary reductions. They have a golden opportunity to IMMEDIATELY wipe the slate clean of their troughing and meaningfully reduce all government spending.

It was very ominous the announcement Key and his 'Intractable Problem Solver' Nick Smith made this week re the ETS.

What disturbs me greatly is the influence Al Gore has ON HIS TARGETS. Gore is getting rich from environmentalism, not just by being paid a whopping $175,000 per speech but by using political pressure to force government policy in a direction that benefits his business interests.

We are witnessing the emergence of a Green-Industrial Complex—an alliance between national governments, enormous corporations, and powerful individuals that uses the politics of fear to procure public money.

This new axis discourages healthy debate (accusing those who question it of being “climate-change deniers”);

thwarts individual initiative (treating saving the planet as something that can only be done by central bankrollers);

and helps to keep the Third World in poverty (encouraging it to remain “carbon-lite” in order to offset the “carbon heaviness” of the West).

Simple answer cut their benefits and make them work physically. As always it is government policies to blame.

I remember reading about the war in Kosova, I think it was. People left their cities, towns, marched over mountainous country. By the time they got to their destination those that were diabetics (not type 1) were free from the high blood sugars.

When you think of World War 2 prisoners of war on very meagre rations, it is amazing that many have lived well past the three score years and ten.

Whale Oil, Why so scathing of fearless, brave Penny Bright? This gutsy lady has principles. I see that hand-wringing has been described as an excessive expression of distress – hand-wringing by some EXPERTS over the state of the economy.

It would be great for readers if you would publish “PROVEN” amalgamation success stories along with the results of the “COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS” studies that will have been completed backing the Super City.

The blurb that is put out about amalgamations sounds great to the average Jo Bloggs:

 Merging municipalities will streamline local government.
 It will make local government more efficient by reducing duplication, by ending overlap, and by reducing the number of politicians.
 It will eliminate 'harmful' competition among municipalities for new economic development.
 It will make local government more responsive to its citizens

Will we see the promise of improved performance?

Just because what works for business does not mean that it will necessarily work in local government.

Key has "obligingly" stepped into the autocratic leadership style which clark represented. More and more each day Key is "unilaterally" imposing his will on the National Party and on the country.

The majority voted for change - not a clone of Clark.

Those who voted for National have been duped once more.
