TBH with you, I think the "Albums" grid view is a nice, usable default that people in general would prefer (IMHO), and that view switching would best be kept in the preferences menu, to maintain the simple, minimal aesthetic that the elementary project is known for.

'sides, playback controls | view options | song playback slider is sort of an odd progression that doesn't seem to fit well in music players. /2cents

Two questions:

Once an album is selected, will a window pane appear below or beside the album grid with the songs of that selected album?

Will there ever be a PPA for 10.10 users?

Re: Tomahawk update lets you play tracks from friends libraries, more

The PPA doesn't seem to allow 10.10 users to install Tomahawk at the moment (as far as I've tried), and there don't appear to be 10.10 packages available at the launchpad site. Well, I'm glad you can still use Wunderlist on Chromium. I've been using Wunderlist for quite a while (I think I was one of the earlier users, before they launched the web version).

I love just about everything about it, except for the fact that it doesn't support subtasks yet (which is quite a necessity for GTD, if you decide to make concrete, detailed steps you need to take prior to completing a bigger, more complex job or task - some forum replies the 6wunderkinder team have made suggest this is forthcoming). I've been working around that shortcoming by treating larger tasks or projects as individual lists, with the inset tasks as the steps themselves (you can see how this can get a bit out of hand). That's why for bigger, more complex projects I use Getting Things Gnome, which does subtasks quite nicely. But it's not as shiny as Wunderlist. :)

Well, here's what works for me as of this post: I'm running Wunderlist 1.2.0 on Ubuntu Linux 10.04 with Wine 1.2.2. It works quite well.

I imagine you may be experiencing problems with either of the following: your version of Wine, or a missing or unsupported .dll that that specific version doesn't have a workaround for for some reason. This is all just speculation on my part, of course. But hey, when I get the chance, I'll try and see if we can't get Wunderlist to work on Natty, yeah? I'll update this post accordingly. Until then!

Re: How To Install Wunderlist on Ubuntu Linux Using Wine

Hello, Martin. I'm afraid I can't comment on using Wunderlist on Natty, as I've reverted to Ubuntu 10.04 for usability reasons (although I am happy to report being able to use the newest version of Wunderlist - 1.2.0 - on it as of right now).

BTW, could you open a terminal and type in "wine --version" (without the quotes) and tell me what the output is? Might be able to work out something from there.

Re: Tomahawk media player adds PPA but not much else

No love for Ubuntu 10.04? The reasons why I couldn't be pried away from Gnome-Do were:

1. Kupfer's UI is a bit too cluttered for my taste, even with some of the more minimal themes (the ones I've tried as of this post). I like simple, minimal interfaces that just get the job done (but looking good's a plus, as well).

2. Gnome-Do has a smaller memory footprint, and is responsive as heck.

A few more iterations down this path and I may just switch.

Re: "For Poor people sign" posted in Greenbelt 4 captured by @jploh - Azrael's Merryland

@jploh: Did the person from mall management give any further comment, such as (1) why the sign was there, and (2) are they going to do anything about it?

Re: "For Poor people sign" posted in Greenbelt 4 captured by @jploh - Azrael's Merryland

Okay. I don't exactly know how to react here. The sign text is kind of too ironic for me to completely believe that it's real (is anyone really in business that stupid to write something like this?), but at the same time... well, at the risk of being a tool, my two cents anyway:

As callous as it sounds, maybe Ayala Center management simply don't want panhandlers bothering customers and patrons. In that case, maybe a sign saying "panhandlers" or "solicitors not allowed" sign would have been a better choice, because this just reeks of class discrimination.

What If I dressed like I just got out of bed and went over to watch a movie or buy stuff over there, would that mean I'd get thrown out because security made a judgement call based on my looks?

I don't like this, and this just reeks of classlessness and stupidity. One's financial capability and situation in life does not determine one's worth as a human being, Ayala Center.

Re: http://shinkaide.tumblr.com/post/3963442488

hilarion said: Pretty ballsy of you. In concise terms, both of them make using a computer and getting work done more complicated than they should be. It's a step backwards.

Maybe it's just because it's a new paradigm in user interfaces. Right now, it's just not working as well as the old model; maybe I'll have a change of opinion when they get it right. Right now, it's too jarring a transition and doesn't exactly consider the user's ingrained habits from using the previous versions of Ubuntu / Gnome (or say, a Windows desktop).

As it stands, if you have to fumble around to get to applications, move and focus windows, and whatnot, that gets in the way of a very important thing - productivity.

The user interface has to get out of the way and make it easier for a user to get things done. Neither Shell nor Unity are currently accomplishing that.

Re: Gnome 3 removes ‘max’ and ‘min’ window controls – but why?

I'm the same way - I learned the keyboard shortcuts and use them for 90% of how I get around Ubuntu (with a little help from gnome do, 'course).

The only time I use the mouse is when I'm doing some graphic work on the gimp or on inkscape, or when I play games.

Beyond those, using the keyboard is just much more efficient than everything else.

Re: Gnome 3 removes ‘max’ and ‘min’ window controls – but why?

I see a lot of strong feelings about this change on both sides. Personally? I lean toward buying in, but not completely - Here's why.

First off, workspaces have been available for a long time on Gnome and I've been taking advantage of that. I'll open up a social message app / content aggregator on one, open up my email on another, and then a word processor for work on another.

Having apps open over multiple workspaces can work as it allows you to organize your work flow and focus (yes, even with the timesuck that is the Internet; but the mechanics of that is a different conversational matter altogether). You don't have to dig around a taskbar or dock for the right window to focus, as you can just expose all open windows across desktops and zoom in to the right one you need.

It can help you work faster than you would otherwise.

I automatically think of it like this:

Workspace 1 = Messaging (Tweetdeck for Twitter/facebook/etc)
Workspace 2 = E-mail (messages requiring a bit more focus and attention)
Workspace 3 = Work (writing, spreadsheets, presentations at the moment)
Workspace 4 = References, related documents via file manager window

... and so on, so forth (with memory and processing power getting cheaper as time goes by, I would imagine multiple workspaces shouldn't be too much of a concern even with the most conservative modern hardware specs).

I can dig it.

But on the other hand, for people who are completely new to the concept of virtual workspaces, it can be a jarring transition, and might possibly be a hindrance to adoption of anything with Gnome 3 on it (and to a much lesser extent, Unity... they still have mini/maximize buttons, right?).

TLDR: I like it, I think it makes sense. Other people might not share the same opinion, and it could be bad for Gnome.

Re: F.Lux ‘natural lighting’ for Ubuntu gets an indicator applet (Updated)

It's still wonky on 10.10. A brand name may sound trivial to some, but it absolutely matters more than it gets credit for (my work involves sales and management, and part of it includes studying customer / consumer psychology).

The software itself is the most important part of the equation, no doubt, but being able to make it appealing to users beyond showing them the technical and philosophical aspects is also an area that should be given some reasonable attention.

Re: LibreOffice now default Office Suite in Ubuntu 11.04

This.

It's hard enough for most people to open up (so to speak) to office suites other than what they've been accustomed to - which is MS Office 99% of the time - without the cosmetic changes that you have to explain to people unfamiliar (and therefore apprehensive) with anything other than Microsoft products, regardless of how logical it is. Most people tend to go with "the feel" first before considering logic.

First OpenOffice. Then, LibreOffice. I've been having some problems of my own installing the newer version of wunderlist (though they didn't seem to change the version number) with the social and cloud features on Ubuntu 10.04. On my end, it wouldn't install at all!

I didn't tinker around too much after that, since I had gone ahead and installed Ubuntu 10.10 and the version of wine that comes with it, so I don't believe I'll be of much help to you with regard to that (sorry!).

Wunderlist installs with no problems on 10.10, however. If it's not too cumbersome for you at the moment, you may try and upgrade Ubuntu, if you have the time.

If you don't want to upgrade to 10.10 yet, you could try doing:

"sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade"

(without the quotes, 'course) to get the newer versions of any available updates for you packages, including wine, and then try uninstalling wunderlist using wine's "Uninstall Wine Software" from the Applications > Wine menu, and then try installing wunderlist again using the same procedure in this post after that.

Let me know if it works, I'm also kinda curious how it runs on 10.04 at this point in time.

Re: The new GNOME 3 website goes live

I hope it can be customized as much as you could gnome 2.
