Clarity in communication matters. You represent yourself as someone you want your students to be. Being a clear communicator seems to be lacking there. This is something that can be costly in the non-academic workplace where second chances to explain oneself are rare. If you are unrepentant about your lack of communication skills, then you would not be someone I'd want to be if I were your student.

Re: Is That Whining Adjunct Someone We Want Teaching Our Young?

Apparently, from the same shop where one gets the bootstraps they need to pull themselves up by. Don't look at me. I don't know where to buy big girl panties.

Re: Is That Whining Adjunct Someone We Want Teaching Our Young?

Yes, she is frustrating and her letter to the editor was insensitive and out of touch. Name calling doesn't help. That's also known as ad hominen. Keep away from the insults, especially the sexist ones. Attack her argument. What does she say? What's problematic about her claims and generalizations? That is the more intelligent and right way to go about it.

Re: Is That Whining Adjunct Someone We Want Teaching Our Young?

This is very funny considering her “bring it on attitude” with her comments here. Where's her “big girl panties” now? She can't handle discussions like an adult?

I'm still amused over her expression “big girl panties.”

Re: When Opportunity Knocks Now, It’s the Opportunity to Be Exploited

“I'll confess, gasp, that I could have worded that better. But then again, does that really matter?”

Yes, that matters.

Somehow, you got caught up in harking on personal responsibility in a way that came across as clueless, out of touch, and insensitive. Your endless responses to comments on your letter to the editor doesn't ameliorate that perception various commenters and those in my network who shared the link to your story on Facebook have.

I don't doubt you're a nice person or that you want to help. The spin you're doing now doesn't help. The problem is you spit all this stuff out in your letter, and now you're in the damage control mode of “I didn't say that, I didn't mean that, and You're taking me out of context.”

“Or are we going to discuss the real problem? Responsibility for one's own actions? Or the problems with higher education's ratio of ft faculty to pt faculty?”

No one who is adjuncting is dwelling on their actions or personal responsibility on what put us there. Lots of us are having to work multiple gigs, some academic and others non, to have pay and food and shelter and even some money to enjoy life. That does not excuse the inequality in the the workplace. We are doing the same work as tenured colleagues for our courses and I know adjuncts with crazy workloads that exceed 12 units a semester.

We are not a lazy lot. There are adjuncts who are on committees, do projects, meet students, advise clubs, serve in Academic Senate, etc.

That said, yes, some are hacks, hoarders, or whatever else. However, you used them to represent adjuncts as a whole on your rant. Hasty generalizations and ad hominens and misrepresentation hurt, even if it's true for a small sample of the group.

As for the PT/FT ratio, it's about time you bought that up because that's nowhere present in your initial letter. That points to the inequity you don't seem to want to acknowledge. Now that there has been a lot of pushback on what you said, it seems like you're now trying to change the subject.

Re: When Opportunity Knocks Now, It’s the Opportunity to Be Exploited

Here are Professor Stukel's words:

“I can only say that I have had full-time employment with benefits both inside and outside working in academia for over 30 years.”

So what do you, Professor Stukel, mean by this sentence? Can you make it clearer, plainer, perhaps dumb it down for those of us who aren't as brilliant as you?

Re: Republican politician: Gay men doing anal sex is like ‘taking a dump in your bed’

He looks gay. Frankly, I think Comic-Con's an afterthought for them (and an excuse to say in San Diego for a few more days) as they're obsessed with LGBT prides, the San Diego celebration occuring the week before. I like one of my local Twitter friends' suggestion to assemble a hot girl army to make out in front of the WBC, though a hot guy army would do more damage.

As for their interpretation of those verses - geez, what a stretch. It goes without saying they are beyond being nutters.

Re: @shindotv of Shindotv.com makes a depressing disturbing point about the weather in the US….

Thanks for the shoutout! I'm still having to sleep under several blankets and I haven't experienced a summer this cool since 1987. I think 1995 also had a relatively cool summer here. What would really interesting to compare NYC summers with cool summers in the US's sunbelts, if there is a pattern.

Re: http://life.thepete.com/post/783005356

It also reminded me of those Calvin Klein ads from the late 90's, the ones with the emaciated people in the wood-paneled rooms.

Re: OK, it’s now officially too damn hot in NYC. 102 >_<

Here in San Diego, we have the opposite problem. It's been a cool summer here in Southern California so far. Cloudy, low heat, the need to sleep under several blankets at night - it's more like a northern European summer. Something's wrong with the earth when it's scorching hot in NYC and a little too mellow in what should be sunny SoCal.

Re: http://life.thepete.com/post/403725895

Solar power is a must for sure for several things. Maybe I'll start building one, float around the ocean, and I'll call the island "Shindonia." Then I'll find the country that will claim the island and I'd enjoy their protection wherever I go.

Re: Amazing graphic on how useless paying your credit card minimums is from Cracked.com via @shindotv http://goo.gl/gOAT

The whole subject makes me feel ill too, but it's hard to get away from. With the American workforce in dire straits and the economic engines of this country just sputtering, we all have to rethink the way we do business and live our lives. The things that stand in our way is a status quo that no longer works - automobiles, conspicuous consumption, financial practices that have led to this mess, and unsustainable technologies and power sources. All these things are unsustainable, so why are we trying to build our country back to what doesn't work.

Like you, I don't buy this whole hyperbole of tearing down the house to rebuild the kitchen. The support structure of the house is rotten, termite eaten, unstable, or all of the above. The whole house, or national culture of how we do things, needs an overhaul.

Re: http://life.thepete.com/post/393155061

I think George Cloutier found a more surefire approach to entrepreneurship - find a clientele desperate for his services.

Re: http://life.thepete.com/post/387500946

That is really cool!
