Hotels have outsourced their digital marketing to OTAs. Many do not have a strong social presence, are not telling their brand story as part of the destination experience, and are definitely not listening to the social chatter and engaging online. I created and implemented a strategy for a NY hotel to do just that and they started getting direct bookings. But with many other hotels I talked to they are so invested in dying marketing trends and paying OTA commissions that they are not able to focus on better digital marketing, which is what the OTAs are taking the most advantage of.

Re: Why W Hotels is dying a social death on Facebook and Twitter

I will give credit to the midtown ATL W Hotels. The hosted a social influencers summit that our agency put together and was very proactive in engaging with the attendees on the social media channels. As a result the hotel received 3.5 million impressions in one weekend.

Re: Johns Creek Councilmembers Oppose MARTA Expansion

There are residents who want MARTA and are pushing back. https://www.facebook.com/Jo...

Re: YouTube exec: We’ve paid out over $1 billion to the music industry over the ‘last several years’

My 12 year old son plays a cover song which I put on YouTube. This was one of the first mistakes. Nor does it stand alone, nor should it be outsources. Social Media impacts all areas of the business and businesses need to integrate social media into all of their communications. A marketing agency should integrate social media into marketing, a PR agency should integrate social media.

I will continue to call my company, Concept Hub, Inc a social media agency because what we do is help our clients integrate social media into their business processes. We do not "do" social media for them nor do we pigeon hole it into 1 or 2 areas.

Re: Question: With so many ideas and exciting pursuits, how do you go about choosing the good ones and following through with ideas as opposed to just talking about them?

I make lists and then let my ADD decide. There are things that HAVE to be done - such as client work, but all the other ideas get the attention that they attract. I also bounce my ideas off of great people and what ever gets the most buy-in usually starts demanding more of my attention. Go with the flow....But be sure to turn on the hose....

Re: Question: Are there 1 or 2 lessons you’ve learned in business that you’d want your son or daughter to know should they follow in your footsteps?

I think the next generation is getting many of the messages of "do what you love" and they have more ability to do so than ever before in history. But I see many who are missing the point of the need to balance what you love and what you need to do to make a living. Take care of your finances is the message I would like to get across.

Re: 8 realities about location-based apps

I agree with you about the publicity and privacy issues and think people are going to be second guessing how much they share. I think the latter is a maturity thing for most people but also a lack of setting bigger goals. You can believe in yourself but choose not to set big goals - perhaps because "it just does not matter that much." It does.

There is a fine line too when it comes to taking yourself too seriously. I have not even come close to that problem.

Re: What advice would you give the younger you?

I would tell my younger me - starting in Elementary School and all the way through to my first two years of running my own company is... take yourself more seriously. Follow your heart fast and furiously. Do not subscribe to other people's egos and issues or carry any burden that is not yours to bear.

Re: Leadership is not something you’re given, its something you take

The strongest point I align with in this post is that you can be a leader without being in a leadership position or rising through the ranks. Many times in my career I was recognized as a leader and offered the positions but turned them down. I was leading my own career at my own pace and did not need a title to take the lead when there was a need.

Re: An honest post about needing to do more

One at a time - it feels like it makes a small fleeting difference, but we do not see the ripple affect that happens from the good we do. Even making eye contact when walking down the street or stopping to listen. But there are also so many organizations that are doing good on a grander scale. Working with nonprofits will never make me financially rich but I love every nonprofit client I work with.

Re: Aw crap, iTunes

not sure if Google Music would be a good solution for you - but that is what I am using and I love it. I have created a guide that walks people through some of those changes. http://concepthubinc.com/re...
From the Linkedin help section:
In many cases, you can withdraw an invitation if the recipient hasn't taken any action.
Click Inbox near the top of your home page.Click Sent on the left.Click the Sent Invitations tab under the top navigational bar.Find an invitation without "Accepted" by the name.Click the subject line of the invitation.Click Withdraw. If the Withdraw button isn't there, the invitation can't be withdrawn. (It may have already expired.)The recipient won't be notified about a withdrawn invitation. If you change your mind, you can send another invitation to the member 3 days after the initial invitation date.

Re: Five Social Media Trends for 2012

I am not sold on influence - not in quantity anyway or as measured by sites like Klout. I still find it too easy to game and people who want influence may seem to have it by the numbers but not by trust and respect. A couple of things I noticed is how accurate the movie Pirates of Silicon Valley is. I already know much of what the book reveals because of that movie. I also think that the book does a good job showing how important Woz was to the revolution.

Re: The State of Social Media 2011: Social is the new normal

These stats in such a contrast to 3 things I witnessed this past week. I was presenting at a Human Resource conference on Tuesday. In a room of about 70 ppl only 2 had social media guidelines within their company and most of the room was not real familiar with the basics of Facebook. While at the Mac store on Wed I helped a Mac genius help a woman grasp the concept of cloud computing and how she can use Flickr to share her photos. On Thurs I presenting to an sales executive group who was just beginning to grasp the value of Linkedin. While social media is pervasive throughout the web, I do not believe people really understand it yet.
