I can empathize, albeit with another, rather different city (Cairo). I have friends who have also drawn the comparison between Singapore and Dubai, but I believe your piece truly reaches the heart of the matter. It's interesting that our relationships with the places in which we've lived are similar to those we have with the people closest to us: all shades of grey in circumstantial complexity and sentiment.
