I've stopped using RSS and have been using a mix of Twitter, Flipboard, and Instapaper. It's been working pretty well so far for me.

I agree with you that education is behind a lot of this. The problem is that the education system cares about money first, education second. Until that changes things are going to keep getting worse.

This argument is weak. FB branded themselves as a PRIVATE place to share things with your friends. Now they are taking gigantic steps in the opposite direction and 99% of people have no idea.

I want to trust companies, but there are very few that allow me to do that. I used to trust FB because they were everything that Myspace wasn't. That is the reason everyone joined in the first place, but then FB learned that there is more money in blowing the doors open. I completely understand this. They have a ton of employees and took a ton in funding, but it doesn't make it right. They have forgotten what got them to where they are, and that makes me incredibly sad. I will keep using FB as long as my friends are on there, but I will be keeping my eyes open for other things.

I think you're misunderstanding the use of the iPad. It's a tool, not a doctor. The doctor controls the device, not the other way around. Doctors have been using computers for years and I'm sure there are glitches in those. Doctors are the ones making decisions, the iPad is just making their job easier and more efficient. I don't see how that is a bad thing.

As for it being unproven, the iPhone OS platform is the most proven mobile platform on the planet.

I think the reason most people "quit" is because they don't know how to use the service. Facebook and Twitter do a terrible job at teaching new people how to use the service. New people just get frustrated and leave. I do understand that there are some people who just don't like Twitter and Facebook and decide to "quit." That will always happen, but for the most part I think it's because of a lack of education on Twitter and Facebook's part.

Monica, this is a REALLY great post. I think about this stuff all the time, and I wonder what my grandchildren will think of me when they can see everything that I have done online. It's scary and fascinating at the same time. I am so glad to be growing up in this generation. We are experiencing so many amazing things.

Twitter should NOT block porn or anything else for that matter. The last thing I want is for Twitter to decided what I am allowed to see. There is already too much censorship in this country, and I think Twitter should stay out of it. If you don't like porn then don't look at it. It's that simple.

I really like what Steve Rubel is doing. Mixing content that he finds interesting with longer "blog" posts seems like a natural progression. I do agree that you need to have a central hub for people to start at. Simply having a Twitter account won't cut it. You need to be everywhere.
