The best thing to do is to plant all your veggies, particularly vining veggies like pumpkins, squash, cucumber, etc. early in the spring - probably May for your zone 6 conditions. My cucumbers produced all summer and would have continued through the fall had I watered better - I was exhausted - got probably 35 or 40 cucumbers out of just a few plants. :-)

Shawna

Re: Use When Drowning

Yeah, but it's an old green stale donut filled with love. You can see the rest of the nation on this hardiness map - http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html.

The benefit of knowing your zone is it saves you money. You know, for instance, that a petunia won't make it through the winter because it is a zone 9 to 11 winter hardy plant, and you live in a 6, which means it will freeze and die.

Almost all vegetables die completely out at the first sign of frost. Not all - but almost all. SO - living in zone 6 you have a little more time than I do in zone 5, but not much.

Building a hardier greenhouse system and considering HEATING that system will extend your growing time considerably. :-)

This might be a good idea for a "real" greenhouse to be built between your windows. You could have a little heating system and a lighting system rigged up with little expense.

:-)

S

Re: Support Probelm with my Small Plastic Greenhouses

What zone are you in? I'm in zone 5. If I wrapped them in sheets, they'd already be dead. It's 30 and 40 degree nights right now. It'll be below zero in another month, so would have to physically heat the containers as well. How much longer do you have until "0" weather?

S

Re: Support Probelm with my Small Plastic Greenhouses

Try using plastic cake covers from the grocery store or Costco - - Duct tape and the cake covers together might work better. :-) Also - once it gets to a certain coldness the soil will freeze. Have you considered insulating the pots as well?

Good luck!

Shawna Coronado

Re: 10 Ways You Can Use Twitter Lists

Great ideas Sarah - of course you're the best at creative Twitter ideas - we love it!

Shawna Coronado

Re: Could You Help Me With a Project

Hi! If you go to www.gardenweb.com and enter that word and all kinds of info will come up about determinate versus indeterminate tomatoes. The basic is that determinate stops growing at a certain height. Indeterminate tomatoes are vines which continue to grow and produce forever if they are allowed to. They will get quite tall in a season.

My indeterminates are currently over 6' tall (thanks to rotted manure compost) and continue to grow and produce.

Back to your question - I have never met a cherry tomato that is determinate - so I think all cherry's will be this size for you. If you want to find a smaller tomato search for one labeled "determinate".

Happy growing!

Shawna
www.thecasualgardener.com

Re: Breaking News: Twitter Debuts New Front Page

Nice blog.
