Both of the unions arguments are complete BS. First, just because this policy doesn't exist in the private sector doesn't mean it's not a reasonable policy. The public sector should take the lead on this issue to restore public faith in their institutions after so many scandals. Second, whose interests are more important, the "innocent" spouse collecting the ill-gotten fruits of someone else's illegal behavior or the public's right to be protected against corruption and theft?

You miss the point. They aren't "whining" because someone else gets something they don't. If I'm forced to pay taxes into a system, I automatically get a right to voice how that money is spent (or mis-spent). In the private sector, if I don't like how a corporation is spending their money, I have the choice not to give them my money and support them. Are you honestly not able to make this distinction in your mind? If not then good luck to you sir.

Do you? Cause I already feel like I'm paying a lot and not getting much. I wonder why that is. We spend more on health care and education than anyone and yet we rank poorly in the services we receive and the results they produce. Something is wrong with our system and to defend the status quo and hold up the DMV as some kind of model is just irresponsible.

This isn't only the DOJ. I personally know an IRS lawyer who show up to work still drunk from the night before and spends his days trying to meet women on Facebook. He makes six figures and enjoys a fun and flirtatious rapport with his female boss. He admits that he does almost no work. There is zero accountability in the U.S. government.

Upon reflection I think this is a small matter designed to distract us to the real theft going on in government. Although it is somewhat infuriating to see "public servants" receiving perks the average person will never get, this is pretty much a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things.

Speeding is involved more likely than not. I see people speeding around the downtown streets all the time. Downtown is full of people and drivers need to slow down.
