I have been the person to volunteer my seat in exchange for a voucher more than once, but ALWAYS before boarding. Regulations are unclear as to the airlines power to remove for this reason after they have allowed boarding. The appropriate way for them to deal with this would have been to delay boarding until the seating shortage was resolved. Not letting somebody board is a WHOLE lot easier than dragging somebody off the plane and would have eliminated all this bad press. Whats another angry traveler yelling at a gate agent? Nobody cares. Drag a passenger off the plane forcibly because he was randomly "voluntold" to give up his seat?
