They tell kids that marijuana "is ten times more potent than before," will cause cancer, schizophrenia, impotence, permanent stupidity, and an addiction to hard drugs. The fact is, marijuana has never, ever, killed anyone.

When kids discover the truth on their own ( which is just a Google search away ), they will realize they have been systematically lied to by people they once trusted. They will likely conclude that if adults lied about Santa Claus, the Easter bunny, and marijuana, they must be lying about meth, crack, heroin, ecstasy, booze, weapons, extreme sports, safe-sex and safe-driving, too. And who can blame them?

We live in a "drug culture" that advertises booze, fast cars, fast food, violent movies and video games, and drugs of all kinds on TV! Then we tell kids "Say no to drugs." We give kids Ritalin, instead of just reducing their sugar and Game-Boy intake, and then tell them, "marijuana is dangerous!" They see right though this hypocrisy. A ruse by any other name...

For those keen on educating kids about drugs - without all the fear-mongering, hyperbole, and absurd hypocrisy of the standard "drug education" programs - I recommend the Educators For Sensible Drug Policy website at www.efsdp.org.

Darral Good

Re: Michael Phelps isn't the problem here - Kent Reporter

It's great to hear from you DOC EDWARDS!
it would be great to see a peice from you in the paper concerning this news in canada:

http://www.theglobeandmail....

Newshawk: CMAP http://www.mapinc.org/cmap
Pubdate: Tue, 14 Apr 2009
Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)
Copyright: 2009 The Globe and Mail Company
Contact: http://www.theglobeandmail....
Website: http://www.theglobeandmail....
Details: http://www.mapinc.org/media...
Author: Carly Weeks
Referenced: The study http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/cont...

MARIJUANA MAY INCREASE SMOKERS' RISKS, STUDY SAYS

Smokers who light up an occasional joint may be putting themselves at
a dramatically higher risk of developing chronic lung disease,
according to a new study by Canadian researchers.

The findings indicate that marijuana, even in small doses, seems to
accelerate the harmful effects of smoking and greatly boosts
respiratory problems and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The disease, which is often caused by smoking, actually encompasses a
few disorders, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. People with
COPD often have difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, and
experience increased coughing. It's one of the leading causes of death
in Canada.

In the study, published today in the Canadian Medical Association
Journal, researchers found that, as expected, smokers were at an
increased risk of developing COPD. But that risk was much higher among
those who smoked cigarettes as well as marijuana, according to Wan Tan
of the James Hogg iCapture Centre for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
Research, based at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver.

"Smoking marijuana and cigarettes is harmful for your lungs even in
small amounts if you smoke them together," said Dr. Tan, who is the
study's lead author.

But the risk of developing COPD was not heightened among those study
participants who said they smoked only marijuana.

Researchers don't know exactly why smoking tobacco and marijuana
apparently boosts the risk of the lung disease so greatly. Dr. Tan
said they believe a chemical reaction may occur in the individual's
airway that spurs the onset of health problems.

Study participants who reported smoking both tobacco and marijuana
were almost three times more likely to develop COPD than non-smokers,
as determined by spirometric testing.

In the study, researchers surveyed nearly 900 randomly selected
Vancouver residents aged 40 or over.

Researchers defined smokers as anyone who reported having at least 365
cigarettes in their lifetime, while marijuana users were defined as
anyone who had smoked the substance in their lives. Researchers
defined substantial marijuana use as anyone who reported smoking at
least 50 marijuana cigarettes in their life.

They found the risk of developing COPD among cigarette smokers
increased if they were heavy marijuana users.

While the risk of COPD didn't seem to noticeably

increase among those who only smoked marijuana, that doesn't mean
they're not doing damage to their lungs.

Dr. Tan said the study found the risk of developing COPD was slightly
higher among those who smoked only marijuana. The increase was too
small, however, for researchers to draw conclusions about health risks.

More research should be done focusing solely on the health risks of
smoking marijuana, Dr. Tan said, to address public confusion about the
issue.

"It's not really widely known that it has this harmful effect. I think
[people] are probably a bit confused by the lack of information in the
public domain to tell them that it's actually got a harmful effect."

Despite this, an editorial being published today with the study
suggests that marijuana users may not need to worry their habit will
lead to serious lung problems. Dr. Tan's study, as well as past
research, hasn't identified a strong association between marijuana use
and chronic lung disease, writes Donald Tashkin, medical director of
the Pulmonary Function Laboratory in the division of pulmonary and
critical care medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the
University of California, Los Angeles.

Dr. Tashkin argued the scant evidence supporting the link means that
"we can be close to concluding that marijuana by itself does not lead
to COPD."
__________________________________________________________________________

Re: Michael Phelps isn't the problem here - Kent Reporter

I am a
Boardmember of the Washington Hemp Education Network (WHEN) I use medical marijuana for HEP-C, yet my doctor is afraid to sign a note for me.
I probably know more about hep-c than my doctor does!
I've had it for more years than I can count! and
and I have read lots of studies that reccomend cannabis/hemp as a good medication after a stroke and to prevent the onset of alzheimers
It's been legal for use in Washington State for over ten years and my doctor is doing anything to help me with the HEP-C!
I'm royally pissed! You don't deserve to be put in jail for it. At least three other presidents have smoked marijuana, and they also don't deserve to be put in jail for it. The hundreds of thousands of marijuana arrests that happen each year in this country are therefore complete hypocrisy.

You've even admitted to using cocaine when you were younger, and the American people don't seem to be holding it against you. You're very open about your struggle, like that of millions of Americans, with addiction to one of the world's most powerful drugs: nicotine.

You agree with many of us about treating drug use as a health issue and not a criminal justice one. You continue to talk about reforming mandatory minimum sentencing and repealing the federal syringe ban that is responsible for hundreds of thousands of Americans contracting HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases.

Your attorney general indicated recently that the U.S. Justice Department is going to stop wasting federal resources arresting medical marijuana patients and providers. The tide is turning in favor of reason, and compassion: California is considering a bill to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana, and the New Jersey Senate recently voted to legalize marijuana for medical use.

Together, we can end the senseless, violent prohibition on marijuana, if you stop arresting people now for what you've done yourself.

PS.

I have one question.
Wouldn't the wine industry lose big money if marijuana were legal
here?
Darral Good

Re: Promoting animal support with vino - Bremerton Patriot

HOW MUCH COULD THEY HAVE RAISED IF THIS WAS A CANNABIS AND WINE AUCTION?

Re: Medical marijuana trial nothing but a witch hunt - Port Orchard Independent

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Here's my video opinion of our marijuana laws

Ironically, the general use of these would have gone by the wayside if our great-grandfathers/mothers had simply warned about the dangers of these substances over ten or twenty years. Look at how cigarette use has dropped, with education alone.

It would have dropped more if kids were not forbidden to smoke by law. Make something a marker of adulthood that doesn't require cooperation of many other adults, and kids will do it to prove their adulthood. Same goes for alcohol, with the added problem of kids teaching other kids how to get drunk, rather than how to drink wisely.

Heck, the cigarette companies may well have been involved in the effort to ban it for kids, knowing how kids are and that it would be the easiest way to get them hooked. I know darn well that big pot growers are trying to keep pot illegal. They're probably behind Ron Maurer's effort to keep the black market in the USA.

And look at trans-fats. Once the word got out about how bad they are, and the manufacturers started advertising "zero trans fats," they've disappeared from practically all prepared foods.

Education would not have stopped the use of heroin, cocaine, or anything else entirely. It would have confined it to those who were addicted and those who really needed it for pain. These preparations were a lot safer than the raw chemicals, cut with unknown substances, that are sold on the black market. At this point, the people who need heroin for their pain can't get it; prescription opiates carry exactly the same risk of addiction; and patients have a big problem getting doctors to prescribe enough. If the practitioners do, they end up being prosecuted.

While in Mexico, people can buy all the Oxycontin (or any other prescription drug) that they need without a prescription. Which means that there is no black market in prescription pain killers in Mexico, and probably a lot fewer people using heroin.

The use of force to do the job of persuasion is counter-productive. Once you introduce force, you throw out persuasion. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." That might do for theft and other real crimes. It doesn't work for private pleasures.

Live free, and prosper.

Re: Medical marijuana ‘advocates’ reveal their true agenda - Port Orchard Independent

Dear Editor,
AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA:
Dear President Obama,

Your administration should stop arresting consenting adults for using or growing marijuana for personal, medical, or research purposes.

You, Mr. President, have smoked marijuana, inhaled, and that was the point. In fact I can't imagine that this little bit of celebrity gossip is even mentioned in the news. Isn't something more important than a olympic swimmer taking a toke? It makes no sense to me why this is a national news story. It's not like he sold pot to your fifth grader on the schoolyard! The only problem I have with this olympic swimmer is the fact that he's already said he is sorry. I can't see any reason why he would need to apologize at all. After all can't we all agree that Cannabis should be perfectly legal, just like alcohol is.
Darral Good

If you haven't washed with a bar of soap made with a generous amount of hemp seed oil, you probably don't know what all the shouting is about.
